I have long hair myself (below the shoulder). My hair is wavy and has a lot of volume so it's easy to avoid the metalhead look. It's a bitch to maintain though, and a lot of the time I just throw it in a bun. Never been mistaken for a girl before.

From what I've seen, long hair looks good on men. But it's so uncommon to see in my area that I can't really judge.

I have thick straight hair and am considering growing out my hair

give it over half a year and you could probably tie it into a really tight bun but it wont look too great and will pull out your hair. try to grow it over the winter so you can hide your awkward stage under a beanie.
this has been growing for just under 2 years now and ends below my collarbones (think Miles Mcmillan). I doubt I'll go much longer than this though.
