Essentially yes, its oxidation, which would be accelerated by wearing them getting water and dirt on them helps too. Leaving them outside in the sun would help achieve this quicker.

IMO its a mix of too many styles, its a dress shoe, but its knit(athletic), but it has runners sole with wood-looking, (maybe leather?) accents between the sole and upper. Its trying to look like a dress shoe's wooden sole, but it just looks out of place on a knit shoe.
Leather on a knit shoe is weird to me too.
