using VMs and Linux will help you bigly, if you cert up in Linux and Virtualisation like VMWare you could get a systems engineer role which is pretty cushy and pays well.
In terms of moving to management it is a thing, you would move to management of a service desk team first then to more technical teams application support or whatever area you are good at, I have seen it happen. Also if you are the same guy that mentioned cybersecurtity earlier that is another area you can move into, one of my old bros from my service desk days does that now and he makes almost double what I get.
