Well all of these styles I associate with people who believe themselves to be apart of the intellectual elite, so for someone to be inspired by these clothing elements and how they are photographed, and wish to replicate it in their own wardrobe surely have the same cultural touchstones that I do to make the association between the manner of dress and the demographic they represent.
To answer your question, It's just hard to believe that someone wouldn't make those same associations if they come from a western culture where attractive people dressed neatly and photographed brooding and gazing distantly away from the camera are assumed to be intelligent or thoughtful.
