I always try to ask myself the following before buying a piece:
"can I wear this without it getting in the way at work?"
"can I do minor physical labour in this?"
"will this be bothersome to take off/put on if I go out for the night?"
"Would I be able to incorporate this into my current wardrobe?"

Lots of y's (especially older stuff that's not as print-heavy) is fairly innocuous and is much easier to incorporate into your current wardrobe (think of that kentaro sakaguchi pic that always gets posted in inspo threads- yohji jacket paired with sweatshirt, skinny jeans, and new balance). Just stay away from the really flashy stuff and you will be fine. You can look at cos and lemaire/uniqlo u for current silhouettes and then find a bunch of old yohji that will fit into the exact aesthetic. Pic related is a very simple y's denim jacket that could go well with almost anything.
