It probably can, but not for long, and then when the inevitable occurs like it did with Pugh and the buyout, you have multiple voices in the creative process and that can certainly be a disruptive influence.
It's hard as fuck to make actual avant garde fashion these days with wearability and functionality in mind because basically everything like that is done. Some designers in a sense walk on the edge of actual wearable/avant garde fashion with their pieces but even then it could be argued it's actually not avant garde at all.
Yohji has some pieces that are in that direction but he has pretty solid foundation on wearable fashion and it's still very much the 'same' as his other stuff, he never really goes all out with his ideas.
