Dress in earth tones, olive green, khaki, light grey, burnt orange, burgundy. Leather shoes or ankle boots, always in brown either tan, light or darker. Use natural materials (wool and it's variants, cotton etc.). If you opt for a sports coat get a tweed one in the colors mentioned above. Tone it down with a white shirt and wool tie. Also, grey flannel trousers go a long way. In my experience, getting dressed as an expert on a matter is quite tricky. You have to seem competent enough to dress yourself approprietly but not take so much pride in it that it overshadows you actual expertise on a matter. That's why I also advise you to avoid trends. Oh, also. sweaters and turtlenecks are your friends. Play with texture. It goes without saying that things should fit you. THAT DOESN'T MEAN EVERYTHING SHOULD BE SLIM FITTING.

I'll dump some inspo.

Then as I stated, I'm afraid I can't help you further. Fall has already began however so you'll have plenty of time until shorts can be worn again. Except, that is, if you live in Australia.

J.crew shirts are a bit naff imo. The collars are too short for any kind of roll and the material just doesn't feel any good to wear.

I do however rate their drawstring shorts. They're the perfect inseam length (6 inches) and they are rediculously comfortable. Again, the quality isn't great but the fit and comfort are.

Suits are overpriced when suitsupply exists.

Socks are ok.

Tees are nice, although the collars have a habit of sagging after a while.

Their chinos are ok. I've never been a big fan of the low rise, super slimfit style that they espouse so that would be up to you.

I've liked a lot of J.crew's outerwear options. I insta-bought a yellow parka they sold this SS and it's one of my favourite coats.

Regarding Johnstone and Murphy, I don't know American brands but a quick look at their site looks like made in italy, blake stitched stuff. If you can I would recommend Allen Edmonds or Meermin. They aren't much more expensive but I'm sure the quality is far superior.

Of course it really depends on your budget. If you can afford it there's much better stuff out there however if you can't (and anyway you clearly like the style) I'd understand and you could certainly be doing a lot worse.
