depends on the region, but it is not really necessarily a thing. we have a lot of boomers (like my dad) who dress like pic rel (almost always v-neck sweaters).
closest thing we have to prep as a subculture is corpsballen which are student societies very close to american frat bros. they wear ralph shirts untucked with jeans, but they have to suit up each weekend for parties.
once in a while i'll see someone dressed in khakis with a tucked in white shirt, it is not unheard of, but not that common either.
a lot of my friends dress 'smart' as in chinos and shirts, but not necessarily prep, i'm the only one who really does prep along side my old German teacher
