>the mechanical spinny gears do look good but im assuming more maintenance and price
in general yes. The most expensive and prestigious watches are 99.9% mechanical. They have less accuracy than battery quartz. +- 10 or so secs a day is very normal. But the charm is in the mechanical aspect of it--think about hundreds of tiny little parts and whirling gears and springs working together, very old school tech. These watches need external source of power, either by winding the crown (handwind) and/or wearing the watch (automatic). There are also small things you need to look out for (Avoiding magnets, sudden shocks, setting the time between 9pm and 3am, moisture)

>Brands to look out for or avoid
AVOID fashion brands. Shit like Armani, CK, even Fossil. They are not real watch companies, outsource their manufacturing to mystery factories in asia, and typically use the cheapest movements possible, its like 90% markup.

>how long can i expect the watch to last
10-20 years or so no service, if you take care of it. Over time the lubricating oils dry up, the spring wears out, sometimes even rust when moisture seeps in (improper care). Depending on the watch, a service might not be worth it. With service a watch can last forever as parts get swapped out or repaired.

>once i measure my wrist is that the same as the strap
no, the strap is longer than your wrist and you adjust it yourself.

dont worry about straps that much, most people swap out their straps (its easy) for different colours, to extend the life of the leather, for different materials (like rubber, nylon etc). You can find everything from $2 to $80+++ straps online.

ideally you should not wear the same leather strap daily, leather needs a break. If you wear it daily it'll get gross quick from all the sweat and moisture. And if you want your leather strap to last longer I also recommend getting a deployant(butterfly) clasp so you arent bending it to shit everytime you take off or put on the watch.
