most of them are because of the R&D that has to go into it or simply for the fact that they're new companies or simply for the fact that they produce in smaller quantities so of course the cost for manufacturing is going to be more expensive because buying materials in smaller quantities is more expensive.

there are still things that cost money.
any type of extra attention to the sewing/seams whether that be bonding/taping/welding them or constructing the seams anatomically.
plus a lot of things are outsourced and patent protected. lots of membranes are, lots of coatings are, gore-tex sure as hell is.

yes sortof. there are different tiers. some, like patagonia, marmot, etc. is closer to sportswear but yes involves tech and is apparel.
outlier, ministry of supply, etc. is techwear that can be applied to an office setting and slightly improves stuff like movement, breatheability, etc.
and then theres like christopher raeburn, acronym, gyakusou which is very conceptual and more fashion-y.
essentially its a movement to improve clothes through technology and science.

fun fact: gore-tex has to be approved for use in clothing products. its very tightly closed, controlled system and they have very little competition.
its a widespread rumor that the gore-tex offices/people whoever "they" are, are more lenient in japan which is why you see so much more crazy fashion stuff overthere compared to here in america.
