I like Buffs. Versatile and cheap, nice way to add a splash of color to a fit. Pic related is a merino version.

Not an Acronym video, but Buff isn't Acronym.

Good post, although I'll add that some of the retro stuff can perform just as well (I'm mostly thinking of wool) and a lot of membranes are frankly overrated, or overhyped might be a better way to put it.

I'd love an anatomically patterned wool flannel shirt with updated techy features.

I wish they had taken a different approach, making this more of a casual all-of-autumn-and-some-of-winter hoody meant to just be thrown over whatever baselayer, that just happens to be a softshell. Do the awesome nylon/wool deal, but at that kind of 285gsm weight. And have people have the 140gsm Ultralight for year round shell use.

But that's my preference, and the jacket isn't really for me - I read anything with just two hand pockets and an inner stow pocket as a casual, laid back piece, even for urban use. I think, *blazers* have more pockets. But Outlier's whole deal is clean lines and unnoticeable function, performance mainstream North Brooklyn smart-casual. Whereas my taste is all about visual density and relishing function, form not just following but flaunting function, turning tools into ornaments and criminal ornaments into countercultural toys. Whatever you call the style of luxury new-construction condos (real architecturefags, help me out) versus a kind of anarcho-Brutalism, Louis Kahn by way of an Occupy camp. And when my taste does hit luxury, it's a more indulgent, decadent, languorous kind - and I guess that's what the Freeshell design looks like to me, something for a bodega run on a torrential Sunday morning when bed is all you want and you can't even think of whatever bougie brunch, except fuck we're out of...
