I was once young too, Fren. The first 'real' watch I bought was the Submariner, but only because my colleague had one and I wanted in on the club. At that time, Rolex was the only luxury watch I knew of, and though we had Omegas in the family, I wanted to get the Rolex because that's what is plastered over Wimbledon (Rolex 'must' be the best, because everyone says it's the best). I was happy for a while because I had it, and at that time it felt like a real achievement to own a Rolex. It was easy to get too; there was no waiting list and I simply walked into the only store in my area that sold Rolex and bought it; I chose the date model because I thought it was better than the no-date that my colleague had; that was the extent of my reasoning. I wore it everywhere, and treated it as if it was indestructible (which, for my purposes, it really was). In the end though, I got bored, so I sold it and moved on. Chronographs proved to be far more interesting and useful to me, and that's been the way things have been.

The difference with Rolex today is that the desirability shot up in Covid, along with all watches really. It'll probably take a few more years before things settle down to 90's era irrelevance once again.

There's literally nothing wrong with Rolex though...it's a fine watch, but you're not going to get much more in daily comfort, performance, etc. than with a great Omega, JLC, or Breitling. Go for the design you want, and see what smiles on your wrist.

I care about the escapement if the watch is to be a personal chronometer. The Zenith 5011k is the perfect example. I do not however care about the escapement in the Omega 1120.

Regarding VC - I would only buy them for their aesthetic appeal. At that price point, I don't care about the movement as long as it keeps excellent time.

It's actually a Zenith, and it uses the 5011K movement which was considered the most accurate movement of its class before the quartz crisis. The design was a combo design by Zenith where they took heavy inspiration from Breguet; the case is silver, and it has a display back. It's absurdly accurate; over the year, it performed better than my 0100. It was not expensive at the time, but I think the prices have gone up lately. It's certainly not "200-300" as the other Anon stated....lol The Waltham however will be around 1400 or so, depending on the condition of the dial and movement, since it's a Vanguard in side-winder configuration (which is more rare than the standard crown-at-12).

The movement is the Zenith 5011k, which was considered to be the most accurate movement of its type to be manufactured before the quartz crisis. Zenith used them in marine chronometers, a series of pocket watches, and also sold the movements to Ulysse Nardin as well to be used for marine chronometers. It has a huge balance, as large as the mainspring barrel, and there are multiple points of adjustment one can make to get it to precise tolerances. You can still find them on Chrono24 once in a while; there were other versions in the pocket watches (i.e. arabic instead of roman numerals, moonphase vs. no moonphase), but in the end I think mine is the best of the options. It's larger than a standard pocket watch, and quite heavy. Perfect with a 3-piece suit, if you ever wear those (I do regularly).

Then your point is correct; mechanicals are less practical than quartz watches. But people don't buy watches for practicality anymore; you can use a phone for that. It might be off by a second or two, but it's not egregious.

People buy mechanical watches for the emotions that are tied up with the item or the idea of rocking one. It's about beauty, aesthetics, feel, sound, and all the other things that come along with the sense of having one.

People buy vintage cars for the same reason.

The Citizen 0100 has an independent hour hand which you can set for any change of time, which allows the seconds not to be interrupted. Of course, the Japanese thought of that...

They're awesoseme. The most accurate movement tested bfeore the quartz crisis, and put into Zenith pocket watches, artisan pocket watches, wrist watch revivals by Zenith, and Ulisse Nardin ship's chronometers. You can still get them on Chrono24 if you search; look for the movement 5011k. They're reasonably affordable, but you have tos earch to get seomthing in good conditions. Aslos; Zneith has gone thw ay of shit regarding replacement parts; so if you have parts that arebroekn or need replacing, you have to have it serviced by them. INdependetsnc can't get parts.

I love mine...it's as accurate as my Citizeene 0100 over the coarse of a year, so accurate enough to be a chronometere in my book.

Pic related; the pokcet watch is diplay back and the balance wheel is almost as large or larger than the mainspring barrel. Proper chfonometer it is. I' wear it regularly when i'm doing 3-piece suits for part of the year, and it performs better than all of my qartuz shitters except the 0100. I'ts the kind of watch Holmes would have. (sherolock, not Eliazabteh.)

You can still get them; the movement is the Zenith 5011K, and if you search Chrono24 or other sites by movement you'll find a few for sale. Zenith also 'found' new-old-stock movements and put them into limited edition watches around 2012 I think (Pilot watches, I think the name 'Aeroneuf' comes to mind); given the size of the movement, these watches are around 50-55mm or so. Great time-keepers, but obviously oversized.

Beware though; Zenith has done what Rolex did and other companies in that they don't sell parts to independents anymore, so if you get one and it needs new parts, you don't have a choice but to send it to Zenith directly. Pain in the ass, and quite costly, but that comes with the territory.
