It sounds like you're using the wrong kind of product. It's probably sumotech in most of these pics. If not it might be talcum powder or hair wax. If you try those and the amount of product you have to put in still winds up glossing/weighing down, then it means their hair is just thicker/wirier so they can have their hair up more.

keep a side part like on the left, and don't let it grow out so much that it droops. Otherwise you're fine.

Let top grow out while keeping sides short/tapered. It should make the cut a lot less vertical.
