I've been dieing to build one of these in my back yard, for storage, projects, and maybe a place to hide when my wife is being psycho.

Any tips for doing it on a budget? How about making it water-proof and insulated?

A bit too late, but perfect for my next construct. Don't know why I didn't think of that.

How much weight does it need to hold? Honestly, there's no reason not to use screws...glue can fall apart eventually, but screwing things really helps them stay together. If it is lightweight, particleboard or MDF will work just fine. With plywood, you can end up with a weird texture...or a lot of splinters unless you get the sanded variety, and even then....

But if this is supporting a lot of weight, go with something a little thicker, pieces of actual lumber like pine or oak.

Draw a plan and come up with precise measurements and you can have your local lumber store make the cuts in the wood for you, so all you have to do is assemble.

To be honest, I pulled it straight out of my ass...but a friend of mine from Georgia wants to build her own, but go vertical instead of horizontal. I'll upload the spec sheet I e-mailed to her.

Here's a closet shelving unit to accommodate my wife's shoe and purse addiction. Built it with no plans, $35, and three hours of free time. Half the shelves are scrap wood from another project. Hardly perfect...but it doesn't need to be.

So you had to be there with them. That could be a little frustrating, couldn't it? Just sitting around waiting for them to finish?

I have a Square so I could accept credit card payments, though...that might be a huge benefit.

I badly want to do something to earn extra money, but I am sorta tied to the house. Lost about 2000 a month when I had to quit, and it is really hurting us.

How do you keep the employees from just pocketing the proceeds or skimming? Lets say you hire them and they go mow 5 lawns at $40 a piece. That's $200, and your share is, say, 20%? What's to stop them from charging more and keeping the excess or saying "I only did 2 lawns", etc etc?

Bumping for interest. I can't have a traditional job at the moment...currently caring for two disabled adults and a child at home. The loss of my income when I started doing this has been really difficult for us, and I want to find SOME way to generate some money at home to offset what we lost.

I'd love building one myself but hell, I'd take a kit any day and just fix it up the way I like.

Any links or info? Also, how would something like this hold up in South Texas with our freaking 100 degree summers?

I'd kill for a Geodesic Dome Home. I have always wanted one...I kid you not, this is my ideal home. I would really like to build a small one (bedroom-sized) in our back yard, to use as my man-cave, but I don't realistically see how I could afford it.

I'm married and I'd take that deal in a heartbeat. I haven't had sex since fucking JULY. I haven't had GOOD sex since 2009. And my wife is ALWAYS resentful of me....no matter what, I am never doing enough for her.

Sex every two weeks and her being cold and distant (IE no fighting)....yeah, that'd be good for me.

Seemed like the easiest and cheapest way to do it. It holds her well...she's been using it for over a week now.

Made a PVC shower-ready walker for my mother-in-law. Her house is about 40 years old and the doors to the bathroom aren't wide enough to accommodate either a wheel chair or standard walker, so this one is narrow enough she can use it without having to walk sideways or even risk scraping her knuckles. May need to reinforce it or rebuild another one for slightly more stability but right now, it gets the job done.

Isn't it a sad world when we have to question the motives of someone doing something nice?

I moved in with my mother-in-law after brain surgery to provide care for her...everyone has asked me why. When I say, "Because it is the right thing to do" they look at me like I'm insane. Our society has become so self-serving that when someone steps out of that and does nice things for another person, people have to wonder if there is something wrong with them.

Scroton is legit, and a heck of a nice guy. He's helping me with an epic DIY project next month. Probably the one guy on 4chan I'd trust at all.

you really are the nicest guy on 4chan! I emailed you.

As an update to everyone, mother-in-law comes home Friday evening. After being trained on her care, it became clear I could not work AND take care of her...had to leave my job. Really sucks but that is the nature of our situation...a series of complications.

Moving into the house today. Boy, it is BAD. Lots of little problems like holes in the wall and peeling wallpaper.

She's 60. The problem stems from the fact she cannot eat on her own, nor go to the bathroom, shower, etc so mobility is a factor. There is also a long list of possible complications from the tumor. This is going based off what we were told....it is entirely possible she could make it 10 years or more. However she may need more care than I can provide in the next couple years, so even if she lives past that, she will need assistance.

The offer of help is awesome as well...if you live in or near the Rio Grande Valley, help would be appreciated.

Where do I acquire this insulation in a reasonable (non-bulk) quantity for a reasonable price?

Thanks man...it is greatly appreciated. There is a LOT that goes into caring for a disabled adult...let alone two! She's coming home next week.

I want to keep this thread alive for referencing while I am actually building. Hopefully this happens soon....completely dependent on family members helping with the money situation.

I told off the barbarians. They are just ghetto and have no respect for anyone else or their property. Said they need to be ready to leave when I tell them to...made them see the error of their ways. Helps I have the ability to have a sheriff remove them...

Anything shipped there is safe now...have them running scared.
