i'm not a hardcore linuxfag or anyhting, but if you're just starting out, use gimp. it has improved amazingly, and starting down that path means you get more out of the user interface, and dont get stuck knowing the ps one like i do.

i hate these. but really for like 1 reason. All fashion tips say kick the square toe and talk trash, but those narrow ass shoes always end up fuckng up my wide hobbit feet.

and thats what happens when you act retarded on diy. yay!

>> No.243343 [View]

okay so i'll say this, your child may come out a little socially awkward, you'll need him to be able to make and have friends.. but i agree that public school is nearly full of stupid people these days, who spend all their time obsessing over seriously retarded social shit. so make sure to socialize them and make sure they get plenty of time to play with friends.

teach your child these things you listed, while you learn them as well, and you'll be able to make some headway. encourage them to email and talk to people who really know some of this stuff too, because a lot of science and math people are more than happy to explain something or offer extra help.

and enroll yourselves in classes at coursera and other places like it. steal off this teaching company courses, both the video and audio kind. try to encourage them with projects like driving around and dumpster diving old electronics to take apart and explore. teach them tying knots. and other basic things like that. take a little while to learn about religions around the world too.

there are also blogs out there for just this. and some of them are not bad.

a last word. teach them honestly about drugs and sex and all. if you have ever done drugs, talk to them about it, teaching a child honestly about substances and safe sex is the best way to keep them from doing anything retarded and ODing. and make sure you are always open to talk to them about everything, that way they dont turn into a slacker wastoid in their future because they got ito an experimental phase and didnt have you for guidance

this one works exceptionally well with the LED mini can-light set ups.

well one thing i'd consider doing is putting down groundcover on the lot that will enrich the soil over time. i saw this guy the other day and it's been on my mind a lot since. http://www.onearth.org/blog/regenerating-landscapes-for-a-sustainable-future

if you work on some of your other projects, and do this with a medium sized compost and spread that around, your soil richness will get better every year without requiring too intensive of an investment on your part.

another thing to consider OP, if you find throwaway mattresses, look for ones with toppers, like pillowtop or what have you, they are normally sewn like a super big pilow and then sewn to the top of the mattress. foam toppers as well.

just cut them off and take those, you could stack a few together and have a pretty nice mattress that you can re-stack and re-sort inside a futon cover. just sterilize the parts before you use them and you're good and have a super comfortable setup.

>> No.241995 [View]

alright i'll say this. if you are going for a used matress, or want to make your own, go for foam, or beanbag (like a bunch of old pillows or blankets). both are perfect for you in the boat you are now because;

1, you sound as poor and unlucky as me right now. you cant afford much. These options allow you to potentially get or make something for cheap,

2. you can bag them or roll them up super small if you need to move them. if youre in a shitty place, then you'll likely move up inthe world or gt kicked from there eventually. think about the last time you had to help move a spring matress

2a. they're much lighter generally. which makes them easier to move alone if you have no help.

3. easy to wash. beanbag style you just pull apart and throw through a wash/dry cycle every season or so. foam you just pour bleach water on and then steam it.

4. you can do more with them, like make a futon out of it, or whatnot, and they arent as likely to jsut fuck up like a spring matress can.

thats what i'd say. also what IS that picture you posted OP? i'm really interested.

sandblast, prime, spray with your own liner. i've every intention to do this in the interior of my van. you can buy cans of it for 15 bucks a pop in home depot. there is also a material called plasti-dip that may benefit you.

do more research.

if you need it for serious heavy duty, then consider the earlier mentioned prospects.

>> No.241924 [View]

1, use LEDs with perfect plant spectrum
2, use super low power pump for aquaponics
3, solar panels and a shed on top that works like a shanty house/ storage space/ office
4, people WILL know you are building something there. it costs a lot to properly busy containers. they have to be shipped by semi, they have to be moved by crane if over 20ft, and they need foundations below, and support walls around them if you want the to not collapse on you. i still havent mentioned flooding risks, or ventilation. most places like to press you for permits on even these now as well. consider an underground house or a sculptural concrete project. If you are building/growing in the US, i wish you luck.

somone else mentioned subterranian culvert pipes the other day, and that really might be the smartest plan, unless you can come up with something better.

the point is that not all modifications have to be made to work the way the most focussed are. a good example is drought resistant rice. it's made off of strains from dryer climates, and spliced into more commonly used species.

i'd rather see some gmo companies working with organic seed sanctuaries and soil cultivators. odds are, you'd be far less likely to be as freaked out by them then. monsanto is a company firmly rooted in the large scale agribusiness, but there are other groups out there, working much more delicately to strengthen species, and trying to come up with better ways to use crops for environmentally friendly systems. maybe they wont be the end all or anything, but if you're growing only one crop on a patch of land, then you're already raping the soil ecosystem. forest gardening would be a better way to invest your time.

using a UV light decontaminator would probably be a smart way to work that out. if worked out in a way similar to the water filtration system, you'd likely be able to implement it with little more than a 10ft patch on a conveyer belt at the processing station

>> No.241578 [View]

Just gonna throw this out there, but hybrid species and gmos aren't bad or dangerous by nature of the practice. You could modify a random subspecies of, say, rice every 6 months to work more strongly in their original climates, and you'd change nothing specific in those areas.

its a matter of focus, and of use. if people hybridized many different types of heirloom rice species, and modified strains were hybridized in INTELLIGENTLY, then we'd have little problem, especially with more sustainable land management practices. like this (http://www.onearth.org/blog/regenerating-landscapes-for-a-sustainable-future))

and modifications for crops need to be ones that are more in tune with the biodiversity stance, and less about nitrogen fertilizers and pesticides.

i've done tons of research on this shit. the problem is that people are using GMOs in stupid ways, and the people opposing them are not really learning more about the possibilities, because fuckers like monsanto jus twant to make round up ready shit.

thats genius. i never thought about the culvert tubing... i wonder what i'd have to do to make that work in an L shaped design with a central dome between them

i had no idea that was a thing now.

goats would be the way to go. though 15 bucks and a machete and a neighbortalented /diy/erwould probably do the job just as easy.

just make sure they dont see you hacking up the neighbortalented /diy/erto get your 15 bucks back

you'd just havve to find a book the same dimensions, and cut the outer shell away, and glue the bind into the inside of the box, and break away the box parts.

not sure why you'd bother though. just take a normal book, and keep it.

leave her be. that being said, if she felt like flashing boobs, knowing she was a maker would be a real turn on, but she didnt flaunt or even mention it, someone just noticed she had tits.

i'm not particularly sure whata knit/perl combo does to the scarf, but itf it's comfy, then its comfy.

you can't be fucking serious.

>> No.240838 [View]

it will really be a couple things that can be the decision maker.

first. you gonna set up a power hookup? how will you consider it? like a few solar panels and some batteries? or did you want constant power?

second. do you need an a/c? will you be alright with a fan and a little fireplace?

third. do you mind thin rooms?

fourth. are there any laws or building codes prohibiting you from staying in shipping containers where you're going?

if you are cool with dealing with each of these things, then you should start considering shipping containers for your design. if you are, say so, i can help talk you through some stuff you'll probably benefit from knowing.
