i appreciate the compliments anon. the stringers were ripped from a 1"x12"x8'. yes it took a bit of sorting to find the right board. on my next build i will rip them and do most the shaping BEFORE attaching them to the sections, and minimize the sanding at the final fitting.

keen memory anon...yea i started this back in early november, and finished about 2 weeks ago. that was spending a couple full weekends but mostly hours after work when i'd otherwise be lurking /diy/ or watching tv.

time well spent imho.

this was my first boat and i think it took about 80 hours, but I could be grossly over/underestimating here. a lot of the time i sat around thinking and generally enjoying myself.

im going to start work on a canoe now for my girlfriend (she doesnt know SHHHHHH).

also i'm planning on making a cedar double bladed paddle.

it's about 1/2 the weight of a plastic kayak you can buy. you can easily pick it up and throw it on your roof rack by yourself. the vinyl is reportedly prone to puncture so stay away from sharp shit like broken bottles. if you want a more rugged kayak, skin it in a thicker vinyl or even ballistic nylon; however, it will weigh and cost more.

the final length was approx 13.5', width 24", weight 24.5#.

materials alone, assuming no waste, it costs about $125.

the plans were free thanks to tom yost. the wood i bought from home depot. the sinew and epoxy i got from amazon. the clear vinyl i got from fabric.com.

it cost me significantly more because i had to buy a few new tools, i bought too much wood/vinyl, fucked some stuff up, etc.

here she is on top of my car. i haven't gotten it into the water yet, its cold as a witches tit up here.

pull that shit real tight and staple it in place. do the same for the deck.

i decided to go against installing the coaming (for now, i may install it later, i already have it cut out) as this is a recreational kayak and i never plan on using a skirt or rolling it.

this is when shit gets fun! you can use vinyl, nylon, polyester, canvas, tarp, pretty much anything to skin it with. i chose clear vinyl so i could watch the fish swim by.

i put a seat in using thin MDF; i used small wood screws to go directly in the stringers. i covered the seat in foam to keep my butt comfortable. i dont have a picture of that (the foam or my butt)

trim the stem plates so they look natural, sand the shit out of everything, and coat everything with some waterproofing oil/stain or whatever you have around.

somewhere along the way you cut off all the zip ties holding the stringers to the sections, and tie them together with artificial sinew. it's basically wax coated polyester

it ended up about 13.5' long and about 24" wide

you fit it by eye, and there may be gaps...just fill with epoxy :)

you can see how i mitered the ends and epoxied/screwed them in place

rip some 1" lumber with a table saw, you need ~16' lengths so I had to join 2 8' sections
