>when I have excess scrap metal laying around I put it on the curb and put an ad up on the craigslist free section and title it something like "cast iron scrap metal" or "aluminum scrap metal" and just put my street with no house number. I could try to build up enough scrap metal for it to be worth taking in, but it would take me a long time. Worked out really well when I needed to get rid of a bad engine block and I don't have a truck to move it anywhere two guys in a truck showed up not 30 minutes after I put the ad up and I got about 5 e-mails asking if It was still available.
> Where I used to work I would set any large scrap metal next to the dumpster because a man and a woman would come by every day in a beat to hell pickup truck, and the woman would get out and lean over into the dumpster, nobody really cared that they did that but I always felt bad.
>I work at a used car lot now and we reposes cars, a lot of times people never come to collect the crap that they left in their cars, I get tools, gift cards, cell phone accessories, shitloads of change, audio cables, brand new packages of stuff, and all kinds of other crap

not saying that it wouldn't take an extrodinary set of circumstances to make work correctly, but if you found a place that was cool about looking the other way, and you basically watched over the place for them, you could work nights, and have a gym membership to take showers use portable electronics and re-charge them at work or at the gym, or have a small solar panel and 12v battery for power, it's at least feasible, not saying it would be worth it though.
It is starting to happen more and more with the steady unemployment.

seemed like the best use for it, because when you really need para cord it's never around.
you could also make a gun sling in the same way, there are also guides on making a woven bracelet similar to that as well. You could also replace your boot laces with it .

what kind of stuff do you want to make?
I had thought it would be cool to make cabinet hardware like handles and drawer pulls, it would be fairly simple and it would be more rewarding because you would have a use for many castings instead of just needing a one time casting

actually I just googled around for a minute, and that is pretty much the best way, but it will take forever. The stuff is tough, and apparently if you try to use a table saw, circular saw, ect. it will just gum up almost immediately. I was thinking maybe a hotknife harbor freight has one for about $15 it's 130 watt, or pic related with one of the different knife blades available for it.

straight edge and a utility knife would probobly work, you could make a simple frame out of wood that you could use to guide the knife perfectly down the middle, I'm assuming you mean length wise. You would probobly have to make a few passes, so lightly score first time, then go a little deeper

You make a sunken earth burm house by making the walls out of tires that have been filled with compacted soil. then basically stucco the outside for aesthetics, it's easy and cheap to build, and there are tons of examples of people building these eco friendly houses in the dessert. They are perfect for that environment because you build it slightly sunken into the ground and the walls are so thick, it basically stays the same temp inside all the time so it's nice and cool during the day and stays warmer at night.

search demonoid for gingery torrent, it has many of his books in it.
There actually is a book that he wrote on making a tesla turbine, which can be ran on compressed air or steam up to 5,000 rpm and makes about 10 hp. His greatest series of books are the ones I just mentioned, but he goes on to teach you how to make an entire machine shop out of basically scraps of metal you can get for free. He shows the lathe, a "metal shaper", how to make a mill, a drillpress, a pipe bender, a sheet metal break, and even accessories for the lathe that allow you to do things like make your own gears. He also wrote books on how to make your own plastic vacuum forming machine, and a plastic injection machine that you can use to recycle plastic bottles into whatever you want.

You, actually have to get the first book, which outlines how to make your own crucible, so that you can melt down scrap aluminum and cast the parts for the lathe, then you actually machine some parts with the lathe only partially completed

I would say unless you are outlining and bragging about a project you are working on or have just finished and it falls under 1 category, computers, cars, papercraft, ect. then it needs to be in its respective forum. Request threads especially where there is a relevent thread already in progress on the same page need to go away. If you're building a robot and you're halfway done and stuck, then start a thread, if you have no experience with something and you start a request thread about how to do it, we all know you are never going to do it.

Here's the oxy-acetalene rig I got from another old dude I used to work with. The tanks were empty when I got it, but they were exchangeable at a local place, so I got full tanks for around $65, and I had to do some welding on the bottom of the cart because it had rusted away, I also re-painted it with $1 green paint from wal-mart, which is surprisingly holding up really well

got this old bastard from my old as hell neighbor, well he lent it to me and I've tried to give it back to him and he always says just hang on to it. I have never gotten it to strike a good arc, but the cables are all cracked and destroyed, and last time I checked 30 ft of welding cable was like $70. He thinks it's my 220 outlet not putting out enough amperage because the only one I have is for my dryer

How about plastic injection using recycled plastics? well he wrote a book on that too, you can make the molds out of plaster, and use recycled milk jugs, soda bottles, or lots of other free stuff. You can make anything you can think of with this, it would be useful for inventing and prototyping, making duplicates of hard to find or expensive to replace parts for just about any application.

yes I think his tubing bender (which is in the torrent) would be an excellent first project for someone who is just getting into this stuff and has a welder.
The thing about this guy is that he wrote these books before the internet was popular, before there was e-bay, or craigslist. So coming by these types of machines second hand was fairly uncommon, and buying them for the home shop or occasional machining operations wasn't feasible for most people

want to do some vacuum forming but afraid of the costs? well he outlines how to make an inexpensive vacuum forming machine, you can use a venturi style vacuum (which can be had for around $10), or a more expensive electric pump.
