Congratulations here's a gold star for the third most retarded post in the thread, you earned this because you wasted words on a retard, thereby making you also a retard. FUCKING RETARD.

The edges came out pretty nice too. The wet sanding really makes the grain on the maple and walnut beautiful.

The chamfers came out decent, if you look a couple inches up on the right one, you can see where I had to fill in where the chamfer ripped it a bit. Oh well.

I sanded it back down with 60, 250, then 400, and finally a wet sanding at 1500. I then soaked in my mineral oil for the finish. It has so far taken in almost 20 fl oz, and I think I will be able to soak in at least half of another bottle.

I proceeded to planing it, but because of all the warping I fixed earlier, I ended up only having to take about 3/16" total, between the two sides.

Next I went ahead and filled in the cracks and new exposed grain with homemade filler. I used mahogany because I have a ton of dust from another project. It was sanded down with 60 grit for now.

I went ahead and added new chamfers on the router, .25" on the top, and .125" on bottom. I had some chip out during this process, so I went ahead and added new filler.

In case you were wondering, the dark spots at the near side in the picture are from my boards getting sniped in the planer. Lesson learned, in the future I will make sure the board length has a an inch or two extra at the end...

Anyways, I first began trying to get rid of the warping. I first tried ironing it w/ a wet rag; no dice. Next, I tried leaving it in the sun for a couple HOT days wrapped in a wet towel. This had some improvement, but it was still warped by over .25". Finally, I said fuck it, and popped it in the oven above a foil tray with water, and steamed it. This got the warp down to just over .125", but, as expected it cracked the board in several spots.

>no pic, I didnt bother taking any at this time.

So I made a cutting board as a gift last xmas, but the jackass let a watermelon rot on their counter next to it. It soaked up a ton of water and warped a bunch. The bow in the middle has 3/8" of deflection...

>pic related is the board when I gave it at xmas

Not bad. I like it.

Are you going to store all this energy you are producing?

Well, I was just thinking about it and realised I have an old Toshiba NB200 netbook sitting in my closet that seems like it would do the job fine if I hooked it up to a touch screen and maybe chucked an SSD in there. What a shame, I was looking forward to making this.. but why pay money when you don't have to, I guess.....

Well now I feel like I've wasted a thread. Welp.

I do plan on securing it so it can't move. Possibly storing it in the glove box? Also, I did say 'passenger seat', as in, the seat without the pedals in front of it.

wat?

I wasn't planning on integrating it into the console, I'd like it to be soft wired so a) I can swap it between cars easily, and b) I can just chuck the screen in the glovebox so it doesn't attract theives. I was planning on mounting it under the seat / passenger leg room. Would that be bad?

What >>370118 said. It's not that I'm a bad driver or anything.. it's just that you can't see 10cm off the ground out the rear window. It would just be convenient. And why not? A camera would only be an extra $30, there's no reason not to at that price.

>>370132
It's more about convenience, you know.. I'd like to put my whole library on it, which exceeds 30gb. Thousands of songs. And navigating through them with nothing but forward/back or playlists would be an absolute nightmare... I still think what you did is awesome though c:

>>370160
It's not too harsh.. not like it gets wet or anything, just a bit bumpy. I was gonna get an Intel D525MW (mobo + cpu combo with no moving parts, passively cooled) and an Intel 330 60GB SSD, so there's really nothing that bumps in the road could break. Those SSD's can take a beating, I think I read somewhere that they can withstand 5000 G's. Not sure though.

>>370209
Well, you could get a screen with two inputs, plug the camera into the priority input, then put draw the power for the camera from the reverse lights. That seems.. not bad?

>>370299
I was kinda hoping to DIY all of it, because a) prebuilt mobile systems seem to be a rip off, and b) if I get bored of it then I can still use the machine for other things, since it's a full computer. But cheers, I'll check it out :)

Is that a documentation of your own project?

If so, that's pretty cool. I'm impressed.

>>369929
a) Could I attach a camera to an android tablet as a reverse camera..... ? Cause that's a biggie personally.
b) Saying 'I built a computer in my car' would be fucking epic.

O hai

I'm guessing you want me to answer your questions in a reply, so: I'd dedicate a good $800 NZD to this I guess. Got nothing better to do with my money. I don't know much software... I've never coded but I can use a computer without hassle. I built my own PC, but I know nothing about vehicle wirings. I have a friend who knows a bit though. I'd like a usable music interface and decent quality audio (I doubt the speakers in the car would benefit from anything too great); I had a play around with 'StreetDeck' and it's got a pretty usable interface. Not fussed on Multitouch and internet browser doesn't matter, mobile internet in NZ is like $1/5mb so it's a tad expensive. Wouldn't mind tethering my smartphone for internet to use a navigation software though.

Not sure what car I'm trying to fit it in yet; I might be getting a new one soon. It would be nice just to have the screen as a clip on/off thing so I can chuck it in the glovebox when I leave the car, so it doesn't get stolen/vandalised/etc. I'm not fussed on having it integrated into the console either, ghetto mounting would be fine.

Your eee pc looks nice :) perfect fit!

Well. So far, my list is:

~ Auto switch to rear vision camera when reversing
~ Music / photos / videos (mainly music but the other two could be handy for passengers on long trips)
~ Plug and play music from flash drive
~ Dock iPod
~ Possibly tether iPhone for net?
~ Maybe GPS?

So, /diy/. I was browsing the internets last night and the idea hit me to make a carputer. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start. Can anybody give me some tips?

Laptop or custom built? Intel atom board vs a raspberry pi maybe? Any advice on front ends? Linux vs Windows for the host os? iPod/iPhone docking? Plug and play flash drives? Add a rear vision camera that auto switches? GPS? Is it even worth the time and effort?

I have decent technical knowledge (built my own PC from scratch) and a fair amount of money and thought it would be a cool project to try out. Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you say so man. But I can tell you it's 100% not me. I'm a little confused as to why you see a random name on 4chan and try to attach a reddit profile to it. In all honesty, I've made 3 reddit posts ever. I dislike the website, almost with a passion.

Just as you set a microwave to 5 minutes, you set an iron to medium heat.
10/10 for making me lol though.
