So I couldn't get it to crank over by giving it power the "proper" way but if I connect a battery directly to the starter wire it cranks. There is no spark, how should I proceed?

So it’s used? It doesn’t want to crank like normal with the starter switch, but the starter motor cranks with power? And it doesn’t run even with direct power to the starter motor?

Check continuity through the switch, check power going to everything.

One more thing I have seen on like 5kw generators, the little oil pressure sensors like to go out and kill the engine, so double check thst the oil pressure sensor is giving you accurate readings.

Download a schematic to see how the ignition is powered. Spinning the starter independently verifies the starter motor works and engine rotates but the next step is to verify the ignition is powered.
From now on stop relying on posting pics without highly detailed information. Most noobs do not know better so this isn't to insult you, it's just dumb zoomer customs have taken over which do not help people.
It looks to be in decent condition so you're odds are good.
If you cannot find a schematic you can still draw one including all the wiring you find to aid in determining what's not as it should be. I see a Start switch. Have you rotated the engine with that switch pressed to observe spark? It's possible that while the Start switch won't engage the starter motor (check and sketch all the wiring connected to that switch) it is necessary to hold it in to test. Look for relays and switches you can get rid of or bypass to power the ignition.
If it sat a long time the carb will need cleaning. You can attend to that while troubleshooting the electrical issues.

Looks like a "Cummins Onan" https://www.rvhabit.com/post/cummins-onan-rv-qg-4000-generator-exercising-carburetor-maintenance-surge-prevention

so go find literature for those and search how to locate your serial number. There's plenty of info.

If there is any kind of on-off switch for the engine, make sure it's on before testing for spark. Also check for kustom kill switches if the generator is used but new to you.

Test components of the starting circuit in order of ease. There should be a solenoid if you trace the starter wire back a little bit. Test the solenoid by putting power to the signal terminal(s) and ohming the power terminals. If good, check for voltage to signal terminal(s). If you have good power and ground signal, replace the wire terminals and clean all connections. If no signal voltage, find out whether it's the power or ground that's missing.

It takes a long time to write all this out so do some of these checks and let us know where you end up.

Yeah I found it at a scrap yard and it looked clean, like I bet under 100 hours on it. So I confirmed the engine turns by hand and decided to take a shot at it, $35. Could make my money back selling just the starter. Good idea on the oil sensor I'll have to check that along with other junk.

>>2046110
Yeah sorry for not posting more info I was on my way out the door and wanted to go ahead and get the post up. The fiberglass case says "Cummins/Onan RV QG 4000"

>>2046134
Took a look didn't see anything useful.

>>2046138
Looks like I will have to take the bottom off to access all that junk. I'll give all this a go tomorrow if the weather is good.

For the oil pressure sensor, there was an easy way to bypass it to test it out. I believe it works on resistance, and when the thing is functioning properly, it’s very high resistance with good pressure, so disconnecting the wire tricks it. If you disconnect the oil pressure sensor and it runs, that’s the issue.

That equipment tho, always left sitting with old gas in it that gums up the whole fuel system and destroys the fuel lines, but that wouldn’t mean no spark in your case.

Doesn't appear mine has a sensor.

Is that gasoline powered or propane? Did you check the basics first? Compression and spark plug? I would start with cleaning or replacing the plugs and carb and doing an oil change. Anything that been sitting while will have goobers in all areas that contact fluid.

>> No.2048020

>>2047515
Its gas, and I don't' have a compression tester but turning the engine by hand I can feel it.

where is the spark plug cap?

>> No.2048833

This
>>2048020
How about the other questions I asked you? That plug has corona discoloration or goobers discoloring it, so it's possibly bad. Literally the first thing you should do when you don't have spark is replace the plug. Your starter might be a completely separate problem, but you aren't going to get anywhere if you don't have a good spark plug. Did you even clean anything yet?

>>2048833
I don't know what you mean by cap? Anyway my friend got it to fire up the solenoid wasn't wired right. Problem now is as soon as you let go of the "START" button it shuts off. Giving a code 14 which means "Engine running too fast"?

Thats the wire that goes directly to the starter, I don't have the jumper cable connected so it isnt running. The spark plug is out cus I was checking for spark.
