I love my little 1 x 30 sander ($45). Great workhorse for over a year. My 4 x 36 sander ($55), not so much. the 6 inch disc is useless in most cases, the motor gets untouchably hot in 10 minutes (I have reseated the bearings and everything) and it's a PITA to change belts. It's also chatty as hell.

Just assume every HF power tool will need tweaking or modification right out of the box and check YT and Google for the needed mods.

harbor freight tools for me are like the physical version of bethesda games. i dont know how many times ive installed say fallout 3 and then spent 6 hours modding it, having a blast, and then only played the game long enough to see that the mods worked.

I got pic related a few days ago. People were saying it’s a great light even at full price for $40. Goes on sale a lot for $35 but then I found a coupon for $20. The magnetic base is strong and the thing is bright so it is really versatile.

They’re new Hercules lineup is kinda fucked up because it costs as much as DeWalt and Milwaukee, but supposedly it’s nice. The one Hercules tool that has been getting some talk is their miter saw. I think it’s around $350 and people say it’s on par with the $700+ DeWalt.

Had to use the 25% off coupon for something.

I really want to get that wire spool holder they have that comes with a dozen little spools of random wire gauges but everybody says that most of it is way too small. They give you like 15’ of 12ga but then 50’+ of 22ga and other stuff that will burn up for most applications. A couple other stores sell the same exact wire set for $50-$80 and HF has it for $40. I guess I could always use a 20% off coupon and snag it for $32 and I wouldn’t regret spending the extra $2 and not buying it today for $30.

Also Walmart isn’t terrible. They have their Hyper Tough stuff which is like the same as the cheapest HF tier of tools. Then they have Stanley which isn’t bad DIY tier. Stanley FatMax tools are closer to contractor/trade tools. I would gladly use some Stanley pliers or those FatMax screwdrivers aren’t bad. People here only shit on it because they’re sold at Walmart.

There is some truth to it though, there’s some stuff that I’m 95% sure came off the same factory line but they rotate stamps between “Pittsburgh”, “HDX”, “Kobalt”, “Autocraft”, etc and the prices are all over the place.

I was pretty much assuming the $2.49 bottle of blue threadlocker is repackaged superglue. I’ll fux wit it on some non-critical stuff just to see what happens. I’m not about to buy HFT Gasket Maker or something to do a head gasket on my car, I’ll spring for the Permatex.

Read the reviews online. It defaults to “Top Rated” so you gotta change it to “Most Recent” to get a fair assessment. That new Bauer corded 120V impact gun is so tempting with the $99 coupon.

I don’t think those Bauer or Hercules tools are too bad. Problem is you only get a 90-day warranty and if you want a 2-year, it ends up costing just as much as Yellow on sale with a factory 3-year warranty.

It’s an oil filter removal tool. Stick it on a ratchet, twist counter clockwise and it tightens up the jaws. My mechanic buddy told me to grab it after I was getting frustrated with the big channellock type ones. They work better than you would expect and are real nice in certain engine bays where you have no goddamn room to clamp down on the channellocks and twist at the same time.

I've had a $20 Shitcago Electric recip from HF for years now and I suspect that's in part because I treat it like a budget power tool, not a $400 industrial one. Pruned trees, removed bushes and small trees, repaired decks, ripped up fences, etc with it and while it's always run rougher than my buddy's Dewalt it was also a whopping $20 instead of $150+ so what do you expect.

Cheap phillips and torx are prone to deformation with use and especially if you're camming out or slipping a lot. Baby the cheap ones and they'll tide you over otherwise spend a few extra bucks for something more robust.

Most importantly, if the list calls for insulated screwdrivers then GET INSULATED SCREWDRIVERS

Spend a few extra bucks even if it's just something like Stanley over basic Pittsburgh. Cutting edges esp are going to be vulnerable to deforming sooner with chinesium metal than midgrade/homegamer tier, and the strippers aren't as likely to be in proper spec or fit/finish which will just make using them a hassle. Again, even just one tier up from bottom-of-the-barrel will save you a LOT of headache almost immediately.

Sometimes people there have no idea what shit is worth or setting up fixed prices, if a new toolbox comes in they just throw it the tool section without looking at it. I really enjoy getting there and buying old tools, its not alway a win but a few times a year you find some good stuff.

The thing with craigslist, ebay or other sites is that most people know what they sell and if you can get a good deal you have to fast to get it. Let us know how they are. I have yet to hear anything bad about the Quinn and Doyle stuff. It all seems to be about on par with Channellock or Irwin or whatever major brand. There’s a reason they aren’t as cheap as the Pitts- the grips actually stay on the pliers and the joints are tight. You save the money by not getting middle manned by retailers and muh USA made.

I turned them in to the principal's office, and at the end of the year they were still in lost-and-found, so they let me have them. As a kid they were the only tool I had for a long time. Got a chicago electric recip saw. $20. 6-8 years old. still works.
orbital car buffer $20, a least 10 years ago. still works.
Zip ties, bungee cords, tarps, cheap and do what I need'em to do.
I flip 1 or 2 houses a year, so the stuff I got does what it needs to do, but I don't run the hell out of it, like a full time pro would. Cheap works, til it don't. Then it gets replaced.
A buddy risked getting a 1.5k generator, uses it mostly for camping and outdoors stuff, it works well over the past 4-5 years. I've heard good things about their replacement gas engines for lawn mowers and go-carts.
The total shit things I found are anything electronic, like moisture testers, ohmeters, etc. Drill bits and screw driver tips for power screwdrivers all shred to nothing at first use. Haven't got any hand tools from them. I get all that from flea markets and yard sales. Good stuff can be found cheap, all ya gotta do is look.

Well if you already can tell what quality hand tools are you should have no problem finding some. I started out with searching every toolbox, every toolbag and boxes full with tools, did grab tools that looks and felt like good quality. Also most of the old quality hand tools have some sort of manufacture name stambings. If you have a tool at hand that feels, looks good and has a stamb but you never hear of that tool brand dont worry, some of these are the best ones.

If you see cheap ass toolboxes its 80% of the time not even worth checking, if you open a toolbox you almost know in seconds if its worth to check or if its trash. Pretty much like looking for tools on ebay or craigslist, you will get an eye for that. It sure can happen you buy one or two trash tools sometimes but if you got tools worth a 100-200 in your cart its still a good deal if you maybe pay 20, sure can be different from place to place.

What i really enjoy after i got the tool itself is the research of it, where it was made, who made it, how old tool maybe is and some other historical backrounds of the company or tool itself.

Dont buy new and cheap trash tools cause you are broke or greedy. It is never worth it.

They are hit or miss. HF is famous for "1 job" tools that last just long enough to get the job done then break. Many are like that, but some are true gems. Some of the basic "Chicago Electric" corded tools are just fine, especially at the price. They are a great place for consumables that get tossed anyway, like demo blades and PPE. They are also good for hand tools that are too simple to fuck up, like wrenches and socket sets.

Beware of mechanical things like rathets, high stress things like breaker bars, and high precision things like table saws. These will all likely suck.

Be careful, use your instincts and you'll be able snag some good shit and avoid the bad shit. Don't be afraid to open the box and look at the actual tool before you buy it. They don't have enough store clerks to spot you and come bug you about it.

Never assume a HF power tool is going to work right out of the box. The savings passed on to you mean you need to be QA. I always check the YouTubes for mods/tuning videos and will calibrate based on what I find. I bought a 4 x 36 inch sander and disassembled the whole thing and rebuilt it. Neither of the belt pulleys actually had their shaft screws tightened down, the belt wheels were horribly surfaced and I just needed to correct those items and it works great now.

The real annoying thing now is ever since everybody started laser etching the sizes on sockets, lots of companies won’t even stamp them. The etching can wear off over time even with moderate use. I grabbed a replacement socket from Lowe’s recently and I was looking at the socket in the little baggie and I was confused as hell because the only writing was “Kobalt” and a part number. It took me awhile to even see the etched number on the damn thing.

It’s always had issues with the wire pulsing in quick starts and stops. It’s always been fine after I’ve opened it up and retightened the spook of wire and the adjustable pulley. It would run fine for quite a while then need retightening. Now the readjustments do nothing. The liner may be bad in the whip but I don’t think it’s worth it to try to replace the whip. I doubt I could. I’ve used it quite a bit over the time I’ve had it and overall I’m certainly happy with the time I’ve gotten out of it for $120

Bruh, I did that for a week and went to like 5 different places. When I asked about soldering stuff, they directed me to a plumbing supply store. They were completely useless for anything besides wiring light switches in a house. Only upside was I found an AC line splitter at one of them.

Dude there was real cool, had everything I was looking for at reasonable prices, and I’ll definitely be going back there for future projects. Oh and I think I’m going to stop by HF this week to get pic related. I’m not a fan of those all in one crimper/stripper tools that are stamped out of thin steel.

The reviews on these Doyle tools have been really good so far. I’m not trying to buy a cheap one where the cutters go dull within a few uses but there are a lot of reviews saying these things hold up just as well, if not better than the $30 Kleins and Southwires.

I think this was a steal for $32 after a 20% off coupon. Some other retailers sell the same exact thing for $60-$80 but rebranded with their house name. Each one of those little spools is easily $6-$10 at any of the stores. This thing will save my ass when I need 8” of wire here or 10’ of wire there.

Only problem is I can’t figure out how to take the spindles out so I could replace spools as the run out. I might have to just wind new wire onto em if they’re empty.

You would be suprised, they are stepping up their game on certain things. It’s good for the cheap consumables that the other stores will rebrand and sell for twice as much (literally there are many things that are from the same assembly line at other stores).

But the past couple years they have been bringing in a lot of newer tools made to keep up with contractor grade brands. A lot of it is Taiwan made and you can tell the difference between these tools and typical Chinese trash. These Pitt Pro ratchets are one of those tools. They’re $25-$30, but on par with $40-$50 Gearwrench stuff.

Ashtray and the 3/8” are pretty well used. Haven’t used the 1/2” flex head too much since I got it because the long handle on the 3/8” gives me some good leverage. And that breaker bar is really new, replaced the cheaper Chinese one when they had it on sale for like $14 so now the cheaper one is in the trunk of the car. Also the new impact gun has replaced the breaker bar in many situations.

Well, for $99, I risked it and bought it yesterday (I got the #63444 model, just FYI). I made a plywood "SWAG" table for it and clamped it into my vise to use it as a vertical saw (I also ordered a 3 pack of DeWalt bi metal blades for it). It worked great today. I cut out 6 knife blanks with it and it works as well on metal as my Ryobi 9" does on wood, just have to go a little slower.

My only concern is that since I'm using it as a vertical the open, exposed blade faces me, so I placed a few clamps around the frame tightly to prevent an exploding/breaking blade fly at me.

When I actually get around to building a vertical stand for it, I'm going to fabricate some sort of safety shield around the non-working area of the blade.

I will say, it struggles at the lower speed settings but I don't really need them, so it's not a big deal to me.

I did go around and tighten a few loose bolts and inspected/ran the machine without the blade on at first. The carrying case is a little on the thin side but seems durable enough. Body of the saw is well put together. No visible injection burrs or uneven seams.

I'll update if it needs an update.

Any of the real cheap stuff, beware it the rating is under 4 stars. People will take the price into account when it’s dirt cheap, so they will judge a $300 saw differently than a $70 saw. Northern Tool has these new Klutch 90T Aluminum ratchets that I keep wanting to buy. There is a 1/2” drive model with a longer (15”?) handle but it sketches me out thinking about breaking bolts loose between the fine teeth and aluminum.

There’s no replacement for Harbor Freight but NT is awesome for lots of shit.

I like what NT does with their hand tools.. They have their cheap Ironton brand which would be the shitty HF Pittsburgh. But then they have their Klutch brand which is really good for the money. The sockets are Taiwan made by Apex so it’s like getting Gearwrench for half the price. HF is doing it with some of their tools, the new pliers are a good example.

This is the way to go. I don’t think HF even makes money on these things, and if they do it’s not much. But that’s one of the things that gets people in the door so they buy up all the other cheap Chinese crap and HF can make their profit on the other stuff.

The one in your pic is the Low Profile and it goes on sale for a few bucks less all the time. The regular 3-Ton Rapid Pump is straight too as long as you don’t have to squeeze under a slammed Civic on chopped springs and it costs a little less than the one in your pic. I got mine on sale for like $69.

Everybody says stay away from the aluminum stuff. The yellow Daytona is supposedly really, really good for the price and it will hold up in a shop.

I think you should check out the regular 3-Ton Rapid Pump if you don’t need the low profile you posted earlier. I was looking for a coupon but can’t find one now. They will definitely have one for it within the next few weeks though. It’s like $85 full price and goes on sale for ~$70 a lot. Pic related is expired but you will see another one soon if you sign up for their emails.

If you go look at them in-store, you will see the difference between the one you posted for $30 and the Rapid Pump steel ones. The red ones are like a spare tire jack or maybe if you’re tying to drop a trans or axle, they’re really small. They don’t lift very high either. They barely even lift smaller CUVs/SUVs high enough to get the tires off.

And don’t be a dumbass, get jack stands. The HF 3-Ton stands go on sale for <$20 a pair all the time.

If you do want to go real cheap, I think there’s a coupon to get that $29 red one for $19 right now and you can spend the savings on jack stands.

It will probably work then. For $20 you might as well get it to keep in the garage for shit like that. But if you start working on the car more, I would suggest the $80-$90 ones because even at that price they’re great and make jobs way faster. You could use the cheap one for the car for an emergency but you have to remember that the car might be 6” off the ground, but there’s another ~6” of suspension travel so the thing will be fully extended and it’s barely enough room to get the tire off.

Either way it’s a tool and it’s worth having so you can get the job done today by yourself instead of borrowing or calling somebody to fix it.

Here is an example.
The current 20 ton press has 2 different model numbers.
The bolted together one is physically larger, its a foot taller, its wider and it has a slightly larger working area. Also I hear it has a better pump that doesnt fail.

The welded together one has a crappier bottle jack, its smaller, the C Channel its made out of is thinner and smaller than the bolt together one. And the welds are shitty.

I bought the welded one at first on accident and returning it and got the bolt together one at a different store. Look up "mods" for the press and youll see a ton of people talk about them

I haven’t heard anything but good on those black and red Pitt Pro ratchets. Those are made in Taiwan too so it’s HF’s newer motto of “These tools will last for more than one job!”

I have the 3/8” and 1/2” flex heads and they have treated me well but I haven’t had a chance to really abuse them. The longer handles are super nice. Only complaints you will find are people who say the flex head is too loose (or even tight) but that’s just a preference thing and you can tighten it if you want. And the only broken ones are from retards putting a cheater bar on them and that’s not the tool’s fault.

They don’t have the little ball and spring detent though, so the head flexes freely. And if you’re going to buy more than one of the flex heads, you could also check out Gearwrench. I kinda regretted not getting the Gearwrenches because even with 20% off coupons on both HF ratchets, it was only like $10 less than the Gearwrench 120XP 2-pack on Amazon. Or they have a 4pk with all 3 sizes plus a 3/8” stubby flex head for around $100.

That long handle on the 1/2” is nice after using stupid short Craftsman raised panel ratchets for so many years. You can skip the breaker bar lots of times. Same thing with the 14” long 3/8” drive flex head, I used to need a 1/2” and possibly a few taps with a hammer to get my oil drain plug off after the JiffyMan touched it 4 months ago but now I can crank it off with the 3/8” easily.

What impact sockets did you get? I work for a calibration lab and people have sent these in for calibration. Surprisingly, they always within the 2% unless they have been damaged then they just do not work. Most "click" wrenches are usually out of spec if they are abused or left cranked down before they are put away. These lil bastards just work. For 30 bucks it is a good deal for the home gamer.

The verbiage of calibration VS adjust changes from company. One company may consider checking a piece of test equipment meets manufacturer's specifications is a calibration. Anything that involves adjusting the equipment is outside of the calibration and is considered an adjustment. So if a customer brings in a harbor freight torque wrench and it meets the 4% of setting spec then it is a complete calibration. If it does not meet the spec then an an adjustment is required and that maybe additional. The HF torque wrenches can be adjusted. There is a collar that sits inside of the handle that can adjust the wrench.

I have a feeling that’s more of a precaution when somebody tries to cut through a 3/8” thick bolt and then complains that the cutting edge got fucked up. They will easily do copper wire thicker than that, especially with the pivot joint.

I got the free tarp the past couple times, and I have a handful of those blue lights but the magnets suck and they aren’t that bright. The magnetic dishes might be my favorite freebie. I never get the towels because my mom works in the OR and she gives me an unlimited supply of blue rags and white lap sponges.
