Our kitchen sink is shot and can't be fixed for a while. Doing the dishes has really gotten to be a misery. I just realized, however, that we have a utility sink next to our washer and dryer, complete with hot water. Is it safe to use one of these for dishes? How can I tell?

Why wouldn't a sink in your house be safe to use?

I mean in the sense of "will food matter clog this sink?"

Depends on how much food matter you intend to wash down it.

All sinks i've ever looked after, from kitchen to bathroom, use standard fittings. Take a look at the plumbing, compare the two, if for any reason it looks different to the kitchen just be cautious on the amount of waste poor down it.

So your best bet is scrape off excess food into the trash can or if you have a pet and its safe, let them eat it. As for your utility sink, its sometimes easier to unclog than a standard sink when using a drain machine. Just an ex plumbers tip.

Of course it is.

If you make sure to scrape off all the leftovers first.

Also, make sure to use adequate water: if you let the water run an additional 30 seconds, you are assisting in washing away all the crap.

But seriously, scrape off the plates and pans and whatnot first, and you will have no problems

The only difference in the USA between a bathroom sink drain and a kitchen drain is 1/4 inch in DIAMETER. It means a lot overall, but that is the literal difference.

Kitchen sink drain tailpieces and P-Traps are 1-1/2" outside diameter pipe, bath is 1-1/4" outside diameter pipe. These lighter weight and thinner walled visible plastic or metal pipes typically feed into ABS (black plastic) or iron pipe that is 1-1/2" inside diameter (inside the walls and under the floor). There will, by code, be a vent or perhaps an autovent integrated into the system to allow adequate displacement for proper drainage. Scrape thick sauce and chunks into the garbage and take it out you lazy F. Then wash dishes in the bathroom or laundry sink. I'd use the laundry sink, harder to damage, cheaper to replace. Won't have to replace that pressed fiberglass or nylon laundry tub unless you eat a lot of tomato sauce and it gets stained and you have bad OCD.

What's wrong with the kitchen sink? You realize this is a /diy/ board and we may be able to have more helpful info than if you can use a sink to clean things?

>> No.870709

The only concern would be where this sink drains off to.

Damned washer was trying to walk away during the spin cycle. I had to shoot it.
