I'm planning on building a Mame cabinet, but i'm not sure how to do the controls. I was thinking about PISO shiftregisters + µC
PC sends signal to µC -> µC reads button states into shift register -> returns 2-3 byte array w/ button states to PC
and i think i'll write a lil program that sends the signal/reads the data from the µC and interprets them / sends a key "xy" pressed to Xserver

Or is there a better way? Any other ideas ?

Forget µC. Just crack an old joystick and solder it to your new buttons, levers, whatever you like.
Save the µC to blink some LEDs, they are good at that.

That's a really great idea... Never thought of that... Thanks
