What color should I go for the hardware for this old drafting table I bought? The hardware was brittle and rusty, and so I want to replace them. As you can see, I bought brass screws, and painted the winguts + washers + bolts with a brass-like spray paint.

however, I'm thinking it looks... not that great. What would be a better option? Black? Silver? Go forward with the brass?

nonpainted hardware*

another angle.

I'm biased because I like brass, but I don't really see anything wrong with the first image you posted. Looks nice.

I just feel like it somehow loses some of its old-school charm? I dunno. I may keep it brass

Another shot (haven't done the top bolts yet obviously).

What kind of knobs should I get? I'm not keeping those shitty black plastic ones

The old school is oak+brass

Does it have to be wing-nuts? Otherwise you could get brass bolts and nuts. That way time will add its patina to them and you'll end up with a better result. (I believe)

Yeah, the hardware looks too shiny. Get some antiqued brass stuff like this and stain it slightly darker.

I'm liking the brass look to be honest. Classy.

IMHO was never fan of shiny brass. silver isn't going to work. I'd go either black (so it looks like iron work) or "oil rubbed bronze" (which is a dark brown color).
of hose two I'd try oil rubbed first. can get spray paint in that color that also has a "hammered" effect.

Or..... Just heat the metal uo with a torch and then drop it into a can of old motor oil.

>> No.843978

Use a map torch. Get the piece dull red. Drop it into used oil, for a really dark black use oil from a diesel engine

ooh, that seems easy enough to do and gives a bit more more of the rustic/industrial look I prefer. i'll try to find some of this stuff tonight/tomorrow, but won't get around to posting updates until probably next weekend (when I actually have time to take it all apart again and paint it)

>>843829
doesn't have to be wingnuts, but that's what the table came with so I just figured I'd use those.

The shiny brass against the light wood just makes it seem like a painters art desk or something.

also, any suggestions on where to get new adjustment knobs? or should I just try painting them with some of the hammered bronze rattle-can?

If they're still good, don't replace them. You can refinish those any way you want.

knobs are OK. could just paint them as well. would probably be hard to find different knobs with the correct thread. but it would be possible to make new knobs out of wood and put a counter sunk thread thingy into it... need some tools for that though.

wasn't there a way to darken shiny brass with vinegar or something like that... put it in a sealed container (like old coffee can with plastic lid or something similar) and vinegar and the fumes would tarnish the bras quickly...
thought I saw that on some DIY or HGTV show...

I think there is a liquid you can buy that changed shiny brass into a rusty brown finish... kinda like old rubbed but not as dark. my bro in law bought a new house that had a shiny brass mirror frame in the bathroom. looked 'chintzy' so he got that stuff and it looked a hell of a lot better afterward. think most people use it on old shiny brass light fixtures. shiny brass is SOOOO 1992. ugh.

ahhh here we go, found this:

you use ammonia (not vinegar) and a couple other things you find around the house.

OP here, that would be great but as I mentioned some of the parts aren't bronze, just painted. I'll go with the rattle can for now. Though I am bookmarking these for future reference in case I have real bronze in another project

Hmm.. The black hammered looks like it might fit even better than the bronze hammered? give it a more industrial look... Thoughts?

>> No.844037

>>844029
yeah they do have a whole range of colors... makes it harder to decide which is going to look best! the 'hammered' finish is pretty tough. I did a rusty mailbox with it and the finish lasted for several years outdoors in the elements. now it needs to be re-sprayed. I'm sure if it were indoors it would still be fine.

My bullshit photoshop of what the brass vs bronze vs black would sort of look like.

>> No.844395

Update: Bought a can each of Rustoleum hammered dark bronze and hammered black. i'll try each and see which loos better. couldn't decide and they both look good enough to use on future projects
