The regular Cherokee (made until 2001) or the Grand Cherokee?

The original Cherokee is motherfucking amazing car, but finding one in good shape is hard, next to impossible (rust, head gasket/valves/rings or tranny problems)

The GC from 99 to 2004 codename WJ is great! If you can find one with less than 130k~160k miles on, go for it! With $60 bucks on additives and engine treatments you get and great car for next to nothing. The WJ Limited model was waaaaay ahead of its time.

And you can get parts on eBay 3 times cheaper than dealer prices. I just got 4 brand new Monroe Sensa-Trac shocks on eBay for like $150 with warranty... The dealer would have charged me over $1000 plus labor!

Replaced two power window motor on eBay for $60 each... The dealer was asking me $460 each plus labor, I almost lost it with the guy.. haha

Jeep Cherokees must be shit! You can't go to a repair shop ANYWHERE in North America without at least one getting fixed (mostly brakes, electrical or transmission).

>> No.89994

>>89978
That is because they are awesome cars that run forever with only minor repairs and maintenance. Look in the classifieds or Autotrader. You'll see dozens of the damn things for sale with upwards of 150K on them while most other cars of that same vintage/mileage have been scrapped long ago.

Nope, as a former MOPAR tech I can tell you it's the design and the metallurgy. There are many out there due to the fact that for a while they were the cheapest 4x4 on the market. There is a reason for that, cheaply made parts from impure and cheap alloys. The Canadian made OD transmissions in out 4.0 and 5.0 models is the weakest link in the chain. Aluminum in contact with 1540 steel all through it. Guess which will break first under stress? Unserviceable ball joints because some engineer thought it would be a good idea to put the drag link directly above and 5mm away from the grease fittings. The risk of failure and one wheel going 90 degrees to the side suddenly and at high speeds adds that zing of excitement. Not to mention that for several years the engines consisted of an iron block and aluminum head. Two metals that expand at different rates is real good on head gaskets. I guess that's why they only lasted 20k miles.

iron block - alu head

yeah its not like dozens of engine designs have used this combo successfully

>> No.92356

>dissing Iron block / Aluminum head

Sorry dude, but that ship already sailed. Manufacturers have been using that combination for upwards of 30 years now with no negative effects. People were saying "it'll never work" back in the '70s, but I think at this point reasonable people can agree that it does, in fact, work.

Chrysler corp. electrical systems and transmissions, though, are things we can all agree suck.

>>89978
Part of Jeep's business plan has been to ALWAYS have one model that is the cheapest SUV on the market. The base model Cherokee was that vehicle for a long time. There's a ton of 200,000 mile Cherokees out there in horrible shape from lack of maintenance.

I've managed both a Jiffy Lube and an Autozone. I can tell you with absolute certainty that Americans absolutely DO NOT maintain their cars. At all. You're lucky if they even change the oil, ever - you'd be surprised at the number of 50,000 mile cars I've worked on that still have the factory oil and filter. Most people just don't keep their vehicle long enough to see the effects.

At AZ, we sell more brake pads than oil filters - people will not lift one finger to maintain their cars until the car starts misbehaving. Most people get their first oil change when the oil light comes on after the car finally burns through all 4 quarts of the original oil. And then they'll just keep driving it for a few weeks with the light on before they bring it to Jiffy Lube.

THIS is why when you buy a 80,000 mile used car, it runs like shit and burns a quart of oil a week. Not anything actually wrong with the design or construction.

>> No.93025

wtf? 50k miles without an oil change? Does not compute.

It's not just them. Jiffy Lube was where I saw the most cars in the least amount of time, but the better way to judge is by examining 1-owner dealer trade-ins. The first owner of a car rarely keeps it long enough for the lack of maintenance to catch up with him, and despite the dealer's aggressive shilling for the maintenance department, at trade in time a huge portion of them tend to still have the factory oil filter, cemented on under 4 years of road grime.

Luckily for the second owner, at that point the car is still pretty young, and so long as it hasn't been run completely dry, the engine hasn't taken a massive amount of wear. maybe 2-3x the amount it would have if maintained according to the schedule. Blow-by is still pretty low, so the oil isn't getting as contaminated and doesn't break down as fast as it would at high mileage.

Food for thought: A car needs gas about 10x as often as it needs an oil change (300 mi vs. 3000). An oil change takes about 10x as long as getting a tank of gas (3 min vs. 30). If most Americans were actually doing basic car maintenance according to schedule, there'd be as many lube shops & auto supply stores as there are gas stations.

Running an auto parts store has been a real eye-opener. I had always assumed that oil change supplies were the bread and butter of a parts shop. But in reality hardly anyone ever buys oil change supplies. I'll sell more batteries in a day than oil filters, and WAY more brake pads than batteries. Brake pads and batteries annoy the owner into replacing them - oil does not.
