A few weeks ago I found some old electronic components, a soldering iron and some solder.
They were in the attic at my grandparents house.
I happen to know the solder is about 38 years old as it was wrapped in newspaper from 1976 and has the date 1977 on the reel the soder is wrapped around. So I tried some and it still works absolutely splendidly. No problems whatsoever. Is that some kind of world record? using solder nearly 40 years old?

What, did you think the lead was going to go off?

I thought solder was silver... Either way most metal doesn't "go bad"

well I thought something may have gone wrong with it. I believe the soldier carries its own flux, so
I thought the flux may have decomposed

Silver solder is silver. 'Normal' or soft solder is tin and lead unless it's lead free when I think it's made from garbage instead.

Nah man, it lasts pretty much forever in my experience. I've got a few ancient rolls I've picked up here and there they all work fine.

Oh well its interesting anyway. I'm quite a sentimental person and whenever I use this stuff I feel like I'm burning part of the past away, if u know what i mean i feel like I'm using up stuff that shouold just sit another 38 years in an attic

>I believe the soldier carries its own flux
There is solid solder, which carries no flux, and there is hollow solder, that has one or more "tubes" inside filled with flux
>I thought the flux may have decomposed
Flux that old would almost assuredly be rosin. It might turn onto amber given a few thousand years. It'd still work.

Every time you use it think about Grandpa. Honor his memory with deeds he would approve of.
