Hello /diy/

With my sister being pregnant, I've been thinking about what to get for my nefew/niece.
Last night, I remembered about having a piece of really soft wool as a comforter/blanket.

I enjoyed that more than anything because of how soft, warm and reassuring it was. Apprently, one of my great grand mother knitted it for me. It had large meshes.

I don't think I can do it myself. I'm not the crafty kind of guy and I don't really have time to learn how to do it properly (it has to be fairly resilient to survive everything a baby/young child could do).

I've tried to find something similar on the internet but I can't find anything but cheap wool blankets...

Do you guys know if such things could be ordored?

Was it made out of a bunch of pic related? Its called a granny square blanket. Its made using crochet. That are difficulty level 2 projects, with difficultly level 1 being things like potholders and scarves. Pretty easy. Requires almost nothing in tool costs. Crochet hooks only cost a couple of bucks and then theres the yarn. Good wool yarn isn't cheap though.

The pattern in question was like that but a little larger. Like little diamonds/octogons with space

It wasn't a blanket per se, more a square shaped comforter but really really soft

The style is, "afghan blanket". It is very common. One thing though, wool is normally rather "itchy" for a cuddly blanket. You never really know the quality of the wool if you are ordering it and how itchy it will be or not be. Course wool itches and fine wool doesn't.

I recommend getting finer wool from animals that are not sheep. Like llama for instance.

If you really want the best, get "Vicuña" wool, it is a type of llama, but it'll be Expensive. The only problem is the name "Vicuña" is notoriously overused in fake Vicuña products. And by fake, I mean a fucking Vicuña blanket would cost around $30,000 to $50,000 if it is real.

So, yeah, fuck that and get some regular llama wool blanket or yarn. At the very least get really fine sheep's wool.

The only blanket it looks like is this one, but with really larger stitch; like twice as large as my previous post.
Does it really qualifies as an afghan blanket?

Thanks for your advice on wool!

Yes, it is just a different pattern. Some have massive holes and some fairly small holes and pattern.

Oh, Okay I see.
Are these hard to craft?

>>717532
Is it resilient though?
He/She might munch on it, drag it around the house...

>>717538
Yeah I came across several forum talking about angola but I'm looking at very different prices from site to site so I guess they're not the same quality.

Only until he/she starts teething then your in trouble.

If you do not know how to crotchet...well then yes.

As this anon's sentiment implies >>717578 it is really easy. It is one of the first stitches people crocheting learn I think.

True, but that goes with everything I guess...

The closest I've done is doing a hem (poorly).
So I'm not very familiar with the whole process...

Another question:
Is alpaca machine washable or it has to be done by hand? I figured if it's for a baby, he/she might drool/puke on it frequently...

>Is alpaca machine washable

Some is and some isn't guaranteed 100%. You can get "machine washable alpaca" yarn, fyi. And, you can look for finished products that allow machine washing.

As for the latter vectors of dirty, drool isn't so much a problem and puke shouldn't be if the baby is healthy and parents are burping it properly after feeding.
