so i want to get into artisanal gunsmithing, i was wondering if guys had tips, or advice to share on the subject, and if you could direct me to good material on the subject.
as a first project, i thought of making pic related (4 winds shotgun). has anyone tried making that ? is it a bad idea ?

>> No.679487

any 'gun' whose only selling point is that it can be used and then disposed of by an idiot isn't much.

do even a tiny, tiny amount of google-based research and then read some books. and then more books. And take machine-shop courses are your local community college. And don't build the 4-winds shotgun or anything else from the anarchist's cookbook.

The four-winds isn't. It is a shotgun having a barrel less than 18" and an overall length less than 26". It is a SBS and requires a $200 NFA tax stamp as well as a shitload of paperwork.

Even if you make it 26" long, I'm willing to bet that they'd try to claim it was an AOW. Sure, it's only a $5 tax stamp and approval, but without them, you're looking at the same ten-year prison sentence as any other NFA violation.

Yes, it's fucking stupid. Thank the government.

If you want to be an "artisanal" gunsmith, then you should be looking into fine engraving, woodworking, and that sort of shit. Not "how to cut two pieces of pipe to make a disposable shotgun". See picrelated.

There ain't no such thing.

And "artisanal" essentially is a marketing term at this point to sell the same product you could buy from a chain retailer or manufacturer, made with less efficient methods, and sold at a higher price.

So, an "artisanal gunsmith" would be a custom, one-off manufacturer that is making the same thing as everyone else, only costs more... like more 1911's.

/k/ here
Don't let /diy/ discourage you from exploring the freedom filled projects of home made guns.
The right to self defense is one of the most basic of human rights, and nothing should ever stand in the way of that
A word of warning: creating your own gun and testing it can be very hazardous. Countless men have been maimed and killed by their own weapons misfiring. Use caution and common sense while you construct and test your weapons. Don't use barrels that are too thin or load massive charges.
Just yesterday we had one of our own diy threads. If you check the catalog just once a day you should find a new one within the week.
What you'll probably find:
> Four winds shotguns, 12 and 20 gauge
> .22 pen guns
> 9 millimeter zip guns
> Open bolt .22 pistols
> .22 rifles
> Muzzle loading pipe guns
> Miscellaneous destructive devices (explosives, incendiary devices, poisons)
The 12 gauge shotguns and .22s are easy and safe enough to practice with.
The pipe gun is the simplest, but also the most dangerous to handle.
The others require a few more specialized tools/chemicals to produce, but they are many times more powerful. Think sheet metal and magazine fed guns alongside napalm and hand grenades.
Here are even a couple of videos about making guns:

For an AOW, it's still $200 to manufacture. It's $5 to transfer.

I don't see why it would be classified as an AOW assuming he does reach the length requirements though.

I'm hoping that this dude tries something a little more ambitious than mashing a bunch of pipes together though.

Start off with something like a single shot break action or something. Or falling block, or rolling block.

Those are fairly hard to machine, IMHO. I'd suggest a Quackenbush .22LR. It's a barrel, with a housing on a swing-arm behind it. The housing has a striker inside sort of like the Glock's. It's probably less than a dozen parts including the screws.

Here, picrelated, the perfect rifle for taking care of those pesky bicyclists.

OP, start with basic tasks, like mounting scopes and refinishing stocks. Acquire tools; files, stones, drill press, lathe, grinder, taps, drills, reams, etc. Learn to use them. Assemble an ar-15 from parts. Read up on doing trigger jobs and practice doing them. Learn to be a real gunsmith. A four winds is a good way to end in either prison or an emergency room.

I saw this post go by earlier, and let it go since it doesn't seem like you've really done any research on it. Unfortunately you keep bumping it, so here goes.

First, the weapons threads go in /k/.
>>670504
Says very clearly "No weapons."

Second, the four winds shotgun is not Artisan Gunsmithing. It's a glorified zip gun. If you want to be a Gunsmith, step up and be a Gunsmith. With a drill, files, hacksaw, and stick welder you can do 9,000 times better than the four winds.

Bill Holmes has a dozen books and at least one video on homemade weapons. I've read his ".50 Caliber Rifle construction manual" and found it easy to follow. Note: I did not try to build it fwiw. I've also flipped through 4 of the 5 volumes of Home Workshop guns.

George B. Dmietrieff has some books on the topic too, but I've not read his. IIRC he has a DIY powder, primer, cartridge, and loading book. I've also read his books on grenades, and found the milspec information very informative.

If that doesn't whet your appetite, then slide over and take a look at how AK-74 receivers are made. They are dead simple. You could make a die to stamp these out and be mass producing them in a couple of weeks.

Legality: In the US the ATF has a prosecute first and ask questions never policy. It is legal to manufacture firearms for personal use in many localities, but that legality is largely subject to how much you spend on your lawyer. If you do build guns, keep quiet about it or you will get on a list.

Finally, please quit shitposting unrelated gun rights stuff. A gun is a tool. People either accept it or they don't. Your vehement opinion is unlikely to change any minds.

These, particularly the lathe, would all be really nice to have, but are not absolutely required.

Ops post is about building a shotgun. A break action gun can be competently done with only the tools I mentioned. Optionally, the welder could be replaced by brazing, if that's more Ops thing.

Changing the subject, has anyone seen plans (online or books) for a rifling machine?

I was somewhat interested in this topic as well. Ever since I heard that people in Pakistan make guns in some caves with primitive tools I wondered how difficult making one by yourself would be. I do understand how they can make a receiver, but I don't understand how they would make a properely hardened barrel. I would not expect some of the machines used in the manufacturing process to be available in a cave in Pakistan.
