Dick Proenneke.
Alone in the Wilderness. Who has seen it? This man will make your work ethic look like shit. Anyways, I'd like to someday build a log cabin. And I want to use the surrounding resources with no power tools. Does anyone know of any guides that can help me with that sort of thing? I know nothing about woodworking, but I REALLY want a log cabin of my own.

>> No.67896

Your determination is admirable.
Google "how to build a log cabin" or "log cabin plans."
Then substitute hand tools for every instance of power tools.

Thank you. I'm only 19 but when I'm older, I'm doing this. It's one of those bucket list things that MUST be done. If you haven't seen his documentary, I highly recommend it. He builds his cabin in the wilderness, writes daily journals, grows his own little crops, and hunts his own foods. It's the ultimate test of a man, I think.

>> No.67918

Building with logs is a bit of a skill-set unto itself. Actually, there are schools that run certificate programs for this, so you might be able to glean some info from those.
Another skill-set you will definitely need to look into is tool sharpening. Your saws, axes and chisels need to be razor sharp to get the results Dick was getting. And that's actually something you could start practicing now. In fact, it could be fun to just go to a pawn shop, buy old tools and sharpen/tune them yourself... Voila - nice, cheap tools. Which you can find some trees to practice on.

>> No.67941

There's pawn shops on every corner of the area I live. I'm in the deserts of SoCal, and cutting down any tree is actually illegal because there's almost no trees out here. When I fly back to Massachusetts, that's where I'll start practicing. I think everybody should build a log cabin, just for shits and giggles. Stoners would probably be the most creative and inventive builders.

>> No.68030

I would only do a cabin if I was going to be out there for a long long time. If not, then i would go ahead and build a spider debri shelter. alot easier to do.

>> No.68035

Dick Proenneke is the man. Love to live in the woods aswell but dont think i got enough in ,y country. and no fucking way I'm gonna move to some shitty as country like Canada

>> No.68037

That's the guy who built the cabin in alaska right? When I was a wee lad I'd try to stay up to watch the pbs special but then I'd fall asleep. An inspiration.

proper tools and skills and you can get the job done easily

The hardest and admirable part is to do this and live like that for decades out there, without dying, getting your own food and shit.

Hes a scolar, a gentleman, and a real mans man.

Dick Proenneke, is the bad ass /diy/ety you will never become.

>> No.68236

I remember watching a special about him on PBS when I was younger too. I think they showed him building part of the cabin. He was a diesel mechanic before though, so he probably knew a thing about tools and diy type things.

Does anybody have a link to the documentary?
