Hey /diy/, I want to build a steam engine.
However, I have no experience in making anything, so I think I should start with something simpler.
What are some good metalworking/whatever projects I can start on, that would help me reach my eventual goal?
Any tips for a slightly overwhelmed but somewhat determined newcomer?

maybe start with a kit, and then move up from there?

Have you considered going to your local library and looking through their magazine stacks for such publications as "Live Steam" or "Home Shop Machinist"?

go on youtube and look up chainsaw steam engine. basically you take a 2 cycle engine (like a chainsaw) and you can easily convert it to compressed air (steam) I'm in the process of doing it for a school project right now.
