So i'm wanting to turn my phone into something like a real life pip boy. Something that i could use everyday but in somehing like a disaster or SHTF situation i could still rely on it for useful information. Not really looking for anyhing in the asthetics department but any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

So basicly you want an armband for your smartphone?

So i think most of hese except the geiger counter and the heart moniter are do-able on my phone. Also the arm band is kinda silly. Wouldn't seem like a good idea to keep it on my forearm unless I had a metal enclosure like the real pip boy.

WOW! This is awesome! if this is something I can buy a link would be awesome. As far as looks go this would b ethe right kinda rig. Would, however, want something to cover the screen to protect it

An idea considered by many, I imagine, myself included.

Things I'd want have already been mentioned - pentip gieger counter, heartrate monitor, maps, possibly some kind of frequency scanner/radio, light, hard disk space and some cables for downloading data. I'd probably also try and incorporate a keyboard (touchscreen) and some kind of writing software.

Though you can certainly have maps on the device, in shtf the gps satellites will stop working eventually.

I suggest a kindle and a harddrive with a few terabytes of books. You can build a low power micropc just for loading books on the kindle and everything could be solar powered. Project would also be cheaper and easier, but still very rewarding and useful.

This is a wonderful idea! Kindels are quite cheap if i remember and the interface would be excellent. I do have a simple map application on my phone that does use gps but works offline aswell, however I more like the idea of having all the books, not to mention I have a ton of survival books on my compy.

Any ideas on a geiger counter? I looked online and they are quite expensive or too big for this rig. Are there any models that would be good for this sort of thing?

You could easily use some of the same stuff from this tricorder build: http://www.tricorderproject.org/tricorder-mark2.html

Well I know I couldn't useit as a phone but I wanted it more for what other stuff it could do. I do believe someone else wisely suggested a kindal and i really liked that idea but if you had any suggestions on alternatives I would like to know.

If size is an issue perhaps you could have a voice recorder software and sd card slot to store the recordings?

>> No.543312

Well youd really want it to be non electronic because theres possibility for it to be damaged after a light collision, or in an apocalyptic synario where a solar flare knocks out all electronics :P

How about you just keep a stack of maps and documents on how edibible things, useful minerals, fire starters and first aid and natural medicines and disinfectants.

The original pipboy design isn't half bad. Even if you couldn't make a glass cover for the screen worth shit (i.e. no protective value), the metal overhang would be pretty practical.

At worst it gets in the way.

The Pocket Geiger is an accessory for the Apple iOS or Android device, which works with an accompanying, free downloadable App. To use the Pocket Geiger, simply connect it to your smartphone audio output, load the app, and let it use its photodiode sensors to detect nearby radiation and report the results to the app.

>> No.546392

>>544729
yup its a PIN junction photodiode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIN_diode#Photodetector_and_photovoltaic_cell
it can detect gamma rays and xrays. In order for it to detect alpha decay, you need the detector to be right next to the source or the sources has to be so high that you'll die before you detect it.

This idea seems to have some potential ! so i sorta have a question what you you guys recommend as far as android goes a HTC one or a nexus 5 ? im thinking about doing this and a nexus 5 seems a bit overkill in size !

>> No.546496

The most useful electronics you'll have in SHTF is a GPS, multi-band radio, and maybe an e-reader. You might be better suited with a commercial GPS unit, it has better GPS reception and longer battery life. The ones with 2-way radio are often a few hundred dollars though.

If you stick with the phone, looking for GPS apps made for hiking or hunting.
Don't forget to look for ROMs for you phone if you're running Android. Find something simple, stable, with good battery life. REALLY good battery life. Remove background apps, put it into airplane mode, set the idle clockrate really low, undervolt a tad if the ROM features that, and anything else you can think of.
