How long did it take you?

I'm a sculptor, so the sculpting itself is the most impressive stuff I've 'built' but honestly I'm much more proud of the sculpting and carving tools I've made. Even though they're quite simple I designed each one for a specific purpose, shaped the steel (by cold-working, grinding and sanding), polished it to a mirror finish, and fitted them into hand-finished hardwood handles.

I've done a fair bit of work on my car, which my ex wrote-off but I made roadworthy again. That and a whole bunch of dumb bikes, but the coolest thing came out of a high-school era arms race.

My mates and and I went crazy with building potato cannons and were always trying to one-up each other. Our final collaboration resulted in a breach-loading stainless steel cannon on a swivel mount in the back of an old Holden Kingswood wagon, that ran off LPG with the fuel nozzle on the outside of the car so we could fill it up at the service station. The Kingswood had a roll-down rear window, and in its last stages the cannon had a useless laser sight and a computer-fan setup to vent the chamber through the breach after firing. Also, it had a collapsable barrel made from PVC pipe at one point, but half of that got launched into orbit at some point.

Stupid, stupid Times.

I statistically modeled and coded some dog track software that can predict winners about 80% through cherry picking metrics of races. Took 3 years in my spare time. The real kicker was the ROI was only 10% in a failing dog track gambling system and dropping. I had a new method to work through to get a significantly higher ROI, but I lost interest and shifted my time to other endeavors. Dog racing is all but dead.

May take methods and apply them to horse racing sometime in the future, but I've lost my taste for handicapping.

Hmmm not especially... just be sure to plan it out really well, measure twice cut once etc. The first big thing to look out for is to make sure you don't cut it down too small - everything has to fit back in the cabinet!
Also when I wired up my pedal the first time stepping on it would cause a massive EMI burst and all my MIDI and USB gear would blow out. I needed an electrical engineer friend to design that circuit you see, so the pedal doesn't directly pass current but only a control voltage. Other than that just be careful, they're really nice cabinets and accidentally damaging it would be sadtimes

I run lots of stuff through it, including bass. I have a safety HPF on the Leslie speaker plus I'm now using a 2ch graphic EQ, so the 12" speaker I normally set with a LPF for woofer work only and the Leslie covers about 500Hz+
I don't gig though, I'm not much of a musician, I'm an audio engineer - so I record through it much more than actually play anything myself.

I got a Volkswagen gear handle and made it activate 6 different switches. Based on the difference between the previous switch and the new one, it sends signals to the R1 button on the playstation pad if the difference is positive (Example: 2nd gear to 6th -- difference is +4 = 4 clicks on button R1) and signals to L1 button if the difference is negative (Example: 6th gear to 4th -- difference is -2 = sends 2 signals to L1).

I used a PIC controller, programmed in C and by using bridge mini protobards I soldered wires straight to the Dualshock PCB.

Had to rearrange the clock because the PS2 only used to detect if a button was pressed in between frame refreshes (let's say 30hz), so the flag up on the PIC needed to be extended in order to R1 or L1 be on during more than that time.

Used that on a cockpit so i was able to change gears like a real car..

Biggest? I built a 12x15 playhouse on an old corn silo base for my cousins at my grandmothers. Full sized door, windows etc. Even had electrical ran to it.

Coolest thing? A murphys bed. That was a pretty cool thing to do.

Awesomesauce.

Since you're one of those people who doesn't just dream about stuff, but get down to it AND follow through to completion, do you have any tips on that side of things? It is just that you're naturally motivated or do you have some insights on motivation, stick-to-itivness etc.?

It's not confidence, but practice.
The more things you make and the more tools you have experience with the more insight you will have into what is possible. This allows you to plan any given task out with more specifics as to what materials will work and what tools can perform what tasks efficiently, safely, and reliably.

Failure is always an option, and I have experienced it (even recently). But you can always re-approach a task once you've had time to reevaluate your plan based on what you learned when you failed. Knowing what WON'T work is pretty valuable information and you often times can't learn it any way but the hard way.
