Can any of you give me some information on making lock picks and how to use them? It seems like a very useful hobby so I was looking For info on how to get start. Picture unrelated.

There's used to be lockpick threads twice a week about 2-4 months ago. Try looking through some 3rd party DIY archives - should be easy to find with Google.

Firstly, and I understand it takes some getting used to by people that frequent other boards such as /b/, /diy/ is terribly slow. I usually make a habit of checking my own posts/threads about once a day because any quicker and I'll likely go crazy.

I'm afraid I don't know much about lockpicks, but I may have some useful infographs that I'll dump if I find any. Several come to mind, one specifically detailing how to craft them from hacksaw blades. Also I see similar threads like this maybe once a week or so, maybe there's one still hangin' around in the latter pages - it'd be worth a look.

I had thought about suggesting this, but I know I spent a great deal of time combing through that for good stuff, and to look through for this specifically would be painstaking. Though if OP wants it bad enough...

I recently started this hobby. If you are willing to invest 40 bucks into it, I'd recommend the Ultimate Challenge Lock, pic related. It's nice because you can practice anywhere from 1 to 6 pins, and also security pins. I'm currently practicing with 3 pins.

You're all overlooking the brute force option. Take a straight head chrome vanadium scrediver of same with of key hole. Make sure it has a hex option at handel to install a wrench for twisting. Hammer it in. Then apply wrench to hex head at base of screwdrive by handel. best to use box wrench with pipe for leverage then sheer off the ity bity pins of brass or steal. Nearly as fast as picking 100% entry.

Yeah, but that's not as fun. We're not a bunch of thieves(It's rare to find cases of breaking and entering that involve lockpicking, most use brute force methods). It's a hobby.

That's awesome. I'm going to have to buy one.

again.. this thread isn't about breaking into places, it's about the relaxing, dextrous art of lockpicking.

If you were looking to pick up a set of picks as well, I just recently got the Southord C801 9-peice slimline set, and I have to say I like it a lot. It's so much better than the cheapo 5 dollar set I got shipped from Hong Kong.

If you wanted to make your own, I came accross this nice yt vid a while back. It shows a progression of homemade pics from paper clips to some very nice ones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_xcZpmBqx8

I haven't made picks before but it seems the god-tier diy lockpicks are made from truck wiper blades due to their strength and stiffness.

I'm pretty sure I've got a few books on them, let me search through my stock pile of ebooks and get back to you.
This was a hobby I've been meaning to get into but I haven't bothered reading them yet.

I'm not a lock guru, but I did work on cylinder locks for a year or two. The first thing you should do is read up on different types of locks and how they work. Know their mechanics inside and out. This will give you a better understanding of what you're trying to do when you actually pick a lock. Some locks like the kind you find on car doors you don't even need picks to defeat. Masterlocks, unless they've changed in the past ten years, I've defeated with a simple paperclip. I managed to totally fuck up the springs in the process so try to work on old locks or have backup parts like pins, springs, and the little metal clips that hold everything together. All of that stuff can be found in rekey kits you can buy over amazon.

I have some old wiper blades. I should make a set.

>> No.519584

Why wiper blades? Are they stronger?

>> No.519586

>>519584
I dunno. If you have some on hand I could imagine them turning out pretty sturdy, but hacksaw blades would be just as good you would think - and also probably cheaper if you're going out and buying it. Never picked a lock in my life, though.

>> No.519683

>>519586
Like I said I haven't made any picks so I do not know exactly why wiper blade inserts would be better, just an observation from looking around homemade picks on the internets. I think part of it is that you can get them for free when you/friend/parents buy new wipers.

>>519584
I would also think hacksaw blades would be pretty good. Might be a little more work since there is more to grind away, but that also means you have have shapes with more depth. I read somewhere to be careful not to get the blades that are shatterproof.

OP, there is a useful forum called lockpicking101 with all sorts of templates. Just thought you should know.

Thanks. I'm op and I'm checking out now. Seems like a great resource. Also apparently illegal here in VA. But men whatever. Fuckem.

I normally roll my eyes at people that use the phrase "it's only illegal if you get caught"...but in this case I don't.

The law basically says that if you are CAUGHT POSSESSING LOCKPICKS it becomes PRIMA FACIE evidence of intent to burglarize. So basically they can take you to court if you are caught with them, but you can rebut it.

Let me put it this way. Do you think the popo is gonna raid you for having a crowbar, hammer, screwdriver, etc? Well believe it or not, possession of one of those outside of your home can be considered possession of burglary tools and considered prima facie.

I am NOT a lawyer, but I would think that if you don't carry them on your person in public...you are fine.

Nevada has the same laws, and every year there is a hackercon held there where people pick competitively among other things. They are not hassled either.

Another invaluble source for lockpick laws, and a good organization to be involved in if you like picking.

There is an in depth explanation of VA lockpick laws there.

Again, don't be a dumbass and it probably won't be an issue.

>> No.520037

>>519840
I understand that. Just don't like laws made specifically to hassle people. A real burglar would just break a window.

>> No.520147

>>520037

There are a lot of laws like that in VA.

Possession of an auto knife is regarded as prima facie evidence of intent to sell said knife (a class 4 misdemeanor).

Hell, it used to be illegal to bang your girlfriend if you weren't married.

I would be in jail for so many years right now.... but that said I carry a gun multiple knives and a sword in my truck so I would be in trouble in most other states too.

Not always, when the target is a commercial or industrial one rather than a residential one thieves use more finesse and get real creative. Especially since such targets are far more likely to have (actual working) alarms and drill-resistant locks.

Last year a strip mall dewalt store near me was robbed of all their power tools by burglars that after the store had closed picked a lock on the neighboring vacant unit, then donned handyman belts and neatly cut into the shared wall, cleaned up their mess, then later in the night when no one was watching hauled off every new tool in the store.

>> No.520254

OP, also try checking out Deviant Ollam's books...specifically the 2nd edition of Practical Lock Picking.

It reads like a text book, covering everything from raking, lifting, pick resistant pins, shimming padlocks, and bypassing.

Thanks for the referral I just bought a copy on amazon. As well as CIA lock picking which was a bit cheaper too. I can't wait to get started.
