I'm back, bustas. Doubled up on bearings, switched out the main shaft, and changed that shitty polycord for real chain.

Do you plan on putting a guard on that thing?

Ran it with the polycord and the shit just jumped to hell cause it was crazy unbalanced. The blade has virtually no visible wobble now, and the motor isn't a vibrator anymore. I need to work on chain tension and the base and a guard, but so far, so good.

All in good, time. I need to find enough clear lexan.

>> No.477189

have you cut anything with it yet? can you film it running?

>> No.477190

>>477189
Chucked up the blade in a drill and cut a short section of 1/2" ply. Won't cut anything with the saw until it's complete. But I will make a video when it's done.

>> No.477197

>>477175
so if you cant move the blade how do you plan on cutting anything over 2"

>> No.477199

>>477190
so you actually cut something with it.
and its just clamped to the workbench.

I cant wait to see how this turns out.

>> No.477201

>>477197
I'd say more like 4 to 5 inches since all I'll probably be cutting is 1/8" lexan. No need for a slide. Makes it much simpler this way, too.

this looks like a great way to lose multiple digits on your hands

What's wrong with missing a few here and there?

>> No.477421

Lol. I love the fact that you made this, but I'm also terrified you're going to end up horrifically mangled.

What kind of motor is powering this? Also what is the point of the wood blocks? Some kind of dampening?

All in all, I think this is awesome and probably will hold up much better than the Chinese and Mexican made miter saws they put out now.

If you do lose some digits please make sure to post a picture about why to not make your own miter saw

>> No.477423

Oh boy, this looks terribly awesome, and terrifying at the same time.

Looks like a CIM motor

>> No.477727

>>477421
>>477438
Yep, it's a cim motor. The ply under the blade is to keep it from touching the steel table, and what you think is wood is really lexan that I used as bearing blocks.

>> No.477785

This makes me want to make one with a wooden frame so I can have the ultimate ghetto miter saw.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who is crazy enough for this.

I've been gathering parts on and off - once I move to a place with more space, I want to build a miter saw, table saw, jig saw, and drill press.

>> No.477862

Lexan may not shatter like acrylic plastic but it will flex like a motherfucker, and the flexing gets worse as the temperature increases. I'd use something else.

>> No.477892

>>477862
You may be right, but seeing as the lexan is a good 3/4" thick and even cutting a 2x4 will only last a couple of seconds. Since this will not even be used for that, mostly only cutting 1/8" lexan, I'm not afraid of heat issues.

>> No.477945

Not a bad design mate. once it's guarded up, it'll hopefully serve you well for years.

>> No.478536

The blade is probably the most expensive part.

>> No.478906

>>478532
No cost to me, however, but the motor is 27$. Never bought aluminum, chain, sprockets, or lexan before, so I have no idea.

It would wobble even more while cutting, especially at high speeds. Your setup doesn't look sturdy.

Did you mount the blade on the correct side? It looks like it would throw saw dust in the operator's direction.

Did you actually just post something this stupid?

>> No.479032

I appreciate the diy attitude on this, but chop saws are really cheap.. I wouldn't fuck with something like this, but good on you bro.
A word on safety: build a nice fence (which you plan to do) and clamp your work as often as possible until you're real comfortable with this beast.

To this point >>477892
Kickback happens in less than a second. If it flexes at all while cutting and grabs the work it may have enough force to destroy the whole mechanism. I'd advise that you replace the lexan on the side of caution.

Good luck dude.

>> No.479034

>>479032
Use more aluminum instead of lexan.

>> No.479039

So.. That vertical support beam is only 1" aluminum square stock? Please, add another next to it, tie them together, run your pivot bolt through both, then add some sort of brace going from the top of the new double post away from you.

Err.. Double up your verticle support and add a brace.

I already have a cheap chopsaw. :P And seeing as how this is made from spare parts, I don't want to be a hog with what we have.

I can see how the rear support would help, that's a good idea. But why would I add another vertical support?

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
