I got the only fucking tape at Home Depot that had metric on one side, imperial on the other.

It made me fucking livid. They had a selection of 20 different models of measuring tape - and 19 of them gave you measurement in INCHES and MORE FRACTIONAL INCHES. Or maybe they were clever and gave you FEET+INCHES and HUNDREDS OF INCHES. Hey look at me I'm EZ-READ motherfuckers!

And there were 0 measuring tapes with decimal inches. Why would anyone want to measure by the standards of the entire American manufacturing industry? Certainly not Americans!

>> No.473387

I mean for real.... Who looks at one side of a measuring tape and says "You know what, I like that a lot. But you know what else I need? I need that exact same thing right next to it but with some extra lines in between!"

Nobody says that because it's dumb. And whoever buys that shit should feel dumb.

an old ass stanly fat max extreme.

best tape I've had, has survived so many drops from roofs when framing, couple two story drops too. it's lost all the rubber on it but it's still going after three years

The 25'/8m version of this one, because it's the one the company I work for buys.

Metric on one side, imperial on the other because I live in Canada. Half our work and equipment comes from the US and is in imperial. The other half comes from Europe or Canada and comes in metric.

The most fucked up part is the European equipment we get second hand from the US. All the dimensions are in metric, but the fasteners and fittings will all be in imperial. The drawings will specify things like 1/2" bolts 100mm apart.

I blame America.

said the pleb.
I've switched to these for about 7 years ago and I've used for both framing and trim work, full time. I've never had one fall apart. The design is too simple.
In all reality, I can't think of one scenario where a non self-locking tape would be an advantage.

I bet you rock an ez-read because you cant figure out 16th's.

FYI The lever lock is self locking as well.
Welcome to the future of tapes

I use a metal one I got for a buck at the dollar store. I'm not scared to crumple it when I'm measuring inside the corner of something. A $20 tape measurer I'm not crazy about flexing it.
I do have one of these babies in with my antique tools though. The metal slidee thing is very cool

I enjoy working in both Metric and Imperial. I like Imperial when I'm doing rough work that doesn't have to be precise down to the last millimeter. It seems to make the work go faster if I'm doing framing, roof trusses, building stuff out of felled timber or working with stone. But if I'm doing any type of detailed work where precision is essential on things like dove tails, cabinets, or any type of furniture then I always use metric. Its just too much hassle to try and deal with 8th's and 16th's on that type of work. Just my opinion though everybody will inevitably figure out what works best for them.

I've use this specific model for years. Mine is so beat up, and dirty, but the blade is still true and doesn't warp to the left or right like so many blades do fresh out the box. I need to grab a few off eBay before they all disappear.

because it's easier, shit tier carpenter, master tier carpenters use imperial to the 32 64 th scale with a tape only marked in 16th scale.. you use it because it's too hard for your simple mind.

The original ones were Husky. They were the exact same tape with the only differences being a rubberized emblem, which made for better grips, and they had both metric and imperial.

I don't know if it's just the sheer mass of those things, or maybe it has a slightly more stout spring or whatever, but when I was framing those Fat Max tape measures always seemed to last longer before getting gummed up with dust and shit and failing to retract.

Probably not a concern for anyone who isn't working in a confluence of dirt and sawdust and rain.
