been meaning to do this sometime, don't know of any good places though. Sadly.

>> No.46865

I've been to a few abandoned insane asylums, an abandoned brewery and a few abandoned houses.

Only tips I really have are be wary of security. A lot of these type of places will still have security patrolling. But for cost reasons, most places will have security patrolling only once every few hours. So it's best to park near one and watch it for a while. Find out if there is security and if there is, get to know their patrolling patterns. Don't let this turn you off the idea, though. Security will tend to not give a fuck at these type of places. They realise you're not there to steal anything and will just ask you to leave. They're mostly there so you don't hurt yourself and try to sue the owner.

When you're in, don't use your flashlight when you're in clear open areas. If you hear noises, stay still for a little while.

Other than that, just be careful. These are old buildings that are no longer being maintained and often open to the elements. Tread lightly and if something looks unsafe, assume it isn't and approach with the right amount of caution.

Oh, an abandoned video store, too. That was the best. We found it when we were teenagers and dragged a whole bunch of furniture from junkyards to it and decked it out. Best hangout ever. We used to bring girls back there and get stoned as fuck.

Sounds awesome. You never encountered crazed hobos or demolition teams?

General tip: get a headlamp. Flashlights have their place but are terrible to scrabble around with.

>> No.46890

>>46878
Also, be careful when stumbling upon a hobo living space. Be cautious, know your exits, and keep your crowbar out as a weapon.

And be wary of black mold, and other biological shit that's unhealthy.

As long as you are careful and have the right tools, urban exploration is both fun and useful. You can find a lot of things, materials for your diy projects or places to turn into a hangout. Near my school there's an odd floodgate within a cement room, under a bridge. I'm planning to build a platform to avoid flood-gate water and make it into a home-away from home. Great place.

I have a ham radio and I have the frequency to one of the only mobile security companies for this town.

if you can get your hands on a scanner go to radioreference.com and look up your city most of the time people will have the frequency for registered companies. If its not there you can also search the fccs website

the best way to search the fcc is to use the advanced search feature
use your city and state and make sure your only searching for active frequencies under the status

it helps if you know a bit about frequencies at this point but the best range to search is 100 - 500mhz
this will cover most of the business allocation for frequencies.

once you identify the security groups in your area your pretty well in the clear.

Nah, I live in Australia. There isn't all too many homeless and the few there are just hang around in the city centre. The video store was a local one out in the suburbs in a pretty nice area. It just sat there for years. We only stopped going there when a friend of mine took a shit in the bathtub and stank the place out. No one was willing to clean it so we ditched it.

Found a big box of porn tapes under the counter, too. Which is like striking oil when you're a young teenager.

In order of preference, hobo-defence tools are:
a blindingly bright flashlight
a can of pepper spray
a baseball bat

First two are the best because they work at range and you can't be brought up on murder charges for using them.

Huh, never heard of them. Pretty cool. I'm from Victoria and the second I read the name of that group I thought to myself "I hope they're not going into the mines". Sure enough, first thing it mentions in Victoria. Don't know if I'd be too keen on exploring the mines. Seems quite risky.

I'm an explorer in Chicago. There is a bunch of stuff out here to do. There are a few abandonments of note to explore here. One of the most famous is Brach's Confections - they blew up the administration building in the Dark Knight (The scene where the Joker destroys Gotham General Hospital), I recently encountered a dope fiend who used my headlamp to light the area where he shot up. Nice guy.

Both those posts are me.

The standard place everyone goes to for the first time, be they urban explorer or curious teen wanting to scare girls so they can act like big brave dudes in front of them, is Larundel in Bundoora. It's the old asylum near La Trobe Uni.

It's a pretty well known place, though. Heaps of people go there because it is supposedly haunted. Most times I've been there I've seen other people nosing around as well. I usually just try and scare them. But yeah, security are aware of how many people go there. So your best bet is a week night (maybe wait 'til the kids are back in school). There's usually just a group of three or four dudes running security in a 4WD. I've never seen them go in the buildings, just walking around the yards. So if you get into a building, you're pretty set. Just listen for noises and be wary of your flash light.

In Melbourne. I mean, they exist, sure. But it's nowhere near as big a problem as in other cities around the world. Running into homeless is never something I've worried about while urban exploring nor is it something I've encountered.

Most of the homeless I've seen live under bridges. It's crazy doing the Moonee Ponds bike trail to the Docklands. There's a bridge every couple hundred metres and under each one is a different shanty on either side.

Melbfag here, I used to toke in a house right near the vic market. If you know where la porchetta is, on the street opposite it near the flower store is a perfectly good looking house. Go check out the back street to it, its abandoned and has been for years, I used to smoke weed there as a teenager with mates.

As far as I know its the same, I also checked out a place in Ascot vale right near the race course, it was a famouse pub and now is run down as shit, was kinda interesting but bums came there, its fenced off now with spikes.

Also Northcote and Brunswick have HEAPS of old abandoned factories and housed, the people who own them just do up the fronts to make them look used.

Meh, even if I could afford it I would probably go without. The whole point for me is looking around these places. I like the decayed industrial look and old architecture. I'd rather not see it through a green tint.

The only advantage would be for spotting security. But honestly, like I said earlier in the thread, don't worry about security so much. Maybe this is different in America, but abandoned sites down here, security don't give a fuck. You're not doing any harm and they just want to shoo you along. Worst you'll get is some jaded arsehole security guard who will hand you over to the cops. Even then, the cops really won't give a fuck. Absolute worst case scenario is you'll get an arsehole security guard who hands you off to an arsehole cop and you get a fine, maybe a little community service (assuming first offence).

I've been in a an abandoned mental care facility (I still call it an asylum even though they just had special needs people there not the criminally insane), a few factories, and other places. The asylum was great, huge complex with lots of living spaces, a few observation rooms (Only 5 foot square), a morgue and more. The only hitch? Its a few yards away from a juvenile corrections facility. So to get in we had to get past that. Someone left some chalk and visitors to the asylum have wrote something on the chalkboards.

The fuck of it is, every time I've done UE, its in the middle of the day. If someone catches you, they are more likely to believe you just wandered in there. Where as if you go at night you risk more trouble from law and anyone who lives there.

One of the factories I went to I made the mistake of going at night. Some squatter demanded to know why I was there and threatened me with some glass. I just left

originally new jersey, in florida now. i learned this shit at my uncles and cousins knee. they sorta trained me by age 8 to be the 2nd story man/urban infiltrator. and i was the little fat kid. there are alot of places to "hunt out", even in relatively rural areas. and in urban and college towns you are going to be in heaven. when i lived in chapel hill nc, they have buildings that in april 2008 hadn't had a person in them, since Pringles first came out in the 1960`s. MAD FUCKING PROPS TO CAVE CLAN. those dudes have their heads screwed on straight as fuck. the first times i was ever one the web back in the late 90`s, i saw the cave clan site, and found out i wasnt just a creepy fat dude that could break houses like other fat people open fridges. i was a urban explorer. also if you smoke, stop, and get into shape. you will eventually thank me if you have a dog set on your ass.

It was a thing of beauty though, dead for more than ten years if I'm not mistaken.
Took me about five hours to explore the compound; it was completely shut off.

There was some security but they just did a lazy tour around the compound and it wasn't hard to sneak around them.

PB Blaster. this is your friend. you want those doors opening quiet like. learn how to lockpick, it takes quite a bit of practice, but it is a fun and rewarding skill that you do have to zone out a bit to do quickly (which for a rusty ass lock is +/- under 3 minutes, cause shit in the movies with the paperclip and touching the lock and pop!!!! open, that shit makes me rage hard) a blanket, and a towel. why you ask for those 2 items? because you might need something to cover glass if you have to pull a pane out. and also if you cut yourself being dumb, like i have, and to clean up the blood. learn out about the different older styles of locks, some when corroded can be jimmied with a screw driver since everything on the inside is ate the fuck up. also a drill will work wonders too. just drill horizontally through the keypath, screwdrivers to twist and Voila! open. sometimes. string, is good to have, and bread ties. to mark your path. im going to talk to my cousins tonight about going to see them for christmas, and will talk over this thread with them, maybe they will help out, they know some crazy shit. like how to get into a abandoned hospital through the roof with no ladders and in a rainstorm. I'm sure it is. Just contact the owner of the building. You may have to sign something saying you won't sue if your hurt.

Besides homeless people defense, and stuff to mark paths, clean up, and break in, you should bring some spraypaint, like a can or two of black. Make a marking for other people. Like a signature or something for others to identify who was there. Anonymous, but not entirely, like 4chan.

Well where I'm at we've got a local storm sewer that goes to the Illinois river. Trekked that shit up in the winter. Was a hell of a time, but some tips for other sewer crawlers.

-Boots, waterproof them too.
-GOOD flashlight (I prefer maglites)
-Extra batteries (for said flashlight)
-Cell phone (full charge)
-A basic knife (utility/safety)
-Compass
-Glow sticks or some other marking stuff (thread, flags, etc.)
---So you can mark off where you've been in forks, shafts, etc
-A buddy

Try to avoid getting wet. It sucks. Also sewers are going to have bugs and shit so be wary. Stateside you are going to have Brown Recluses, possibly Black Widows. Bringing a stick or otherwise clearing out webs as you go is a good idea.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse/>

Watch the ice you are standing on. If it breaks you could end up soaked in freezing water. I've found when you are in tunnels or piping the flow rate may drop considerably or the water will just be plain shallow and freeze in odd ways. When you step on this it will make A TON OF NOISE. Try to be quiet if possible.

When it comes to icicles just leave them alone. They can get pretty big and could injure you or someone else mid trip. Worse they could collapse and break the ice you are standing on putting you into half-frozen drain water.

Be on the lookout for homeless, drug dealers, or graffiti taggers. Avoid.

Admire the graffiti. There's bound to be some.

dude that was a great list. you actually managed to keep it brand neutral, which i could never have done, and it would have created a shitstorm.

the only thing i could think of adding to the list is

treat Urban Ex like pretty dangerous hiking, pack out what you packed in. dont leave garbage in these places, they might be someone`s home or hideout. The last thing they want is shit that could give either the cops or security a real reason to snoop up in their shit. and they will most likely fuck someone up for showing up uninvited.

I'ma tell you right now. Be careful where you go in Milwaukee. Once you start seeing more than the usual amount of graffiti, you're headin' in a bad spot.
After you pass under railroad tracks you're pretty much in. That's your last spot to turn back before you're shot or stabbed lol. Milwaukee is a fun place.

Anyone any stable, safe (from hoodlums and druggies), accessible UrbEx locations around the Philadelphia area? I see lots of potential in buildings I see while riding the trains, but they look like a perfect hobo/druggy hangout, so I'm not too keen on going in alone.

Will be up for going on an adventure with anyone in the area this weekend.

really? Idk about this.. I've lived in mke for over 15 years and have never head of anyone being randomly shot or stabbed outside of muggings in the hood. The industrial areas are so vast desolate- no one lives there- are you talking about potential crazy bums? Still haven't ever heard of something like that happening.

Still though, major graffiti *tags* are a sign that this is someone else's territory. not bad advice.
