Can anyone identify what wood this is just by the grain? Found this at work, thinking about using it to make a few knife handles, its about 4ft long.

The grain doesn't look like pine. That said I have only really dealt with white and yellow pine.

A. you can't always tell just by looking at a pic the species of wood.
B. if your 100% certain its meranti, then you have no experience with wood, because if you did, you'd know better than to be 100% sure from a dirty picture.

What sense does it make that someone would find a piece of wood in the trash in the US that came from a tree that doesn't grow here when it looks pretty close to the wood from a tree that grows all over the damn place here.

>> No.462084 [DELETED]

This thread is hilarious. Do any of you guys actually work with wood? I'm a builder/carpenter. I'd say that OP's sample is almost certainly meranti or sapele. It's definitely not oak. Tropical hardwoods such as meranti are imported in vast quantities for use in construction as mahogany look-alikes. They're cheaper than oak and easier to work.

>>461647
Shit dude, if you think those look the same you should get somebody else to buy your timber for you.

Clearly you dont really work with wood either. A. sapele looks NOTHING like that, and B. you wouldnt say "definitely not oak" when it most certainly looks like it could be white oak. It also looks like it could be meranti. but to say for certain based on one pic makes you look like an idiot

White Oak, BTW...honestly tell me it is not possible that is the same wood as OP.

I'm not going to get into the oak/meranti debate, since this does look a bit like some oak I've seen but very unlike some oak boards I've seen. And I've never seen meranti in the flesh.

On to what you want to use it for, if it's reasonably hard it'll work fine for handle scales so the speces is sorta irrelevant. That obvious pore pattern in the wood could be an attractive feature in the finished handle, either left as-is or filled in various ways if you want it totally smooth.

Would like to see what you do with it so please post back once you have the first handle done.

Its definitely a mahogany lookalike. Even if it isn't meranti.
It could be a dense peice of african mahogany (khaya), but usually the denser peices are darker in color.
If it truly is heavy, maybe a really light colored peice of jatoba? I've seen some that aren't too much darker than OP's pic.

And no, I'm not shitposting anywhere. This is the only thread I've posted in in like a week. I work at World of Hardwoods. I CBA to prove it.
