Hi /diy?
I figure I'd try here also. I have an odb2 diagnostic cable for my audi a4 b6. I bought it online, but they want me to pay 100$ to activated it. Are there any free software diagnostic programs for this? Thanks.

I bought one of those for my Vauxhall (Saturn in the US) Astra SRi turbo, it came with a patched (non-legit) version of the OP-COM software on a CD and a link to the updated version - nothing more to buy in other words.
Did you buy yours from eBay? If you didn't, then look on eBay for people selling the same hardware - they might have links to the software for you.

have you actually used this? it looks too good to be true.

thats what /o/ said too...
It just pisses me off because I already have the cable and a laptop, I just can't find the driver...

Are you sure it's just the driver that you need? There's a fair chance that a lot of these OBDII scanners use the same chipset what with them all using the same protocol - only the software that communicates with the car's control modules differing with manufacturer.

If all you need are the drivers I can upload my OP-COM ones for you - the drivers will have been written to work with the generic OBDII chipset and are therefore not covered by any specific vehicle manufacturers copyright.

You'd still need to obtain Audi diagnostic software if you don't have it though.

So after a few hours of messing with it, I've updated a driver in my system settings and it seems to work with limitations.
Works fine for the VCDS-lite (free) software, but not the full (pirat) version. Vag-com and obdII teklinks don't recognize it either..
So I feel as though the windows is updating to an outdated driver. So yea, if ou could post a link i'd appreciate it. thanks

That's a start at least. Give these drivers a spin then:

One of the drivers is named "opcom.sys" and may be what the OP-COM software uses to bind to the driver, so you may have to do some creative file copying from your existing drivers folder (probably a .sys file related to the name of the diagnotic tool) to enable your Audi software to work with this driver.

Good luck!

Your better off getting a bluetooth odb2 adapter for $20 on ebay and an app called torque for your phone

Torque is great for live stats and reading/clearing error codes, but it doesn't do any sort of variant configuration.

I bought OP-COM to add cruise control to my Astra - wiring and electronics was all in place on my model so I just needed to buy the control stalk and mark cruise control as "present" in the control modules - £60 all-in for a £350 option on the car when new and Torque doesn't have that capability.

Most people buy these things for error code purposes so your point still stands if that's all that is needed - but you can do so many other things with the vehicle manufacturer's tool.
