i have a 95 buick skylark with a 3.0 v6 in it, automatic and i need some ways prefferably cost effective ways to make it faster or get a lot more power under the hood then there already is. dont get me wrong it pushes for an older car but anything would help.

>> No.439487

but why do you need to go faster than the speed limit

>> No.439491

Nitromethane and jato rockets. Done.

>> No.439495

>>439487
i never said anything about exceeding the speed limit but i would like to accelerate up to the speed limit quickly.

sounds expensive and possibly explosive for my 180+K mile engine :O

>> No.439498

honestly a better DIY project would be to modify it to hyper efficiency by decreasing its aerodynamic braking coefficient. You like will not get much more power than what you will with its sidemounted front wheel drive v6 engine type.

If at all possible, go for a I4 engine swap out and lighten the frame and car by fibre hood and gutted interior with replacement light weight materials

>> No.439500

rip the interior out, throw anything that isn't need out
thats the easiest and cheapest way

Nitrous. Cheap, effective, and it won't affect your emissions. Kits are also fairly universal so you can move it to your next car after you blow this one up.

true and i was looking at a local buy for a 94 buick skylark with a slightly larger engine than mine..a 3.4 v6 instead of a 3.0. if i were to exchange out the motors (assuming its possible) would i notice much of a difference in power?

>> No.439506

>>439503
how would i go about getting the nitrous? (ordering and whatnot) and im not entirely sure how i would install it or how to use it without blowing up for that matter.

I think /o/ might be able to give you better advice about making you car run faster.

No offense, OP, but your car is granny-tier. Unless you're going for a "sleeper" effect, why not just trade it for an older sports car which was MADE to go fast?

Also there really aren't many performance modifications you can do with the 90s GM V6, at least not on the cheap. Turbocharging it would run you at least $3000 plus a lot of custom fabrication. Most people have nowhere near the technical know-how to do that, and those who do would rather work on a car which can be tuned easier.

But then even if you somehow managed to make the car pull harder, you need to support that power with performance suspension, tires, brakes, etc.

And in the end, you're still driving an automatic Buick.

Never hotrod your main transportation, lest it shit the bed.

Get another vehicle to learn on.

Engine swaps are a pain in the ass unless you are a mechanic, and then they can still be a pain in the ass.

If you are interested in learning, a great way is to take community college mechanic training. If you learn to wrench you can have all the work you want, anywhere, and you will save absurd amounts of money for the rest of your life by never needing to pay others to work on (or fuck up) your rides.

>"fairly universal so you can move it to your next car after you blow this one up"

this because nitrous on your stock motor is gonna fry everything.

For whatever you bought that piece of shit you could have gotten a mid 70's lead sled.
Chevelles and novas are staples.
you fucked up.
You could alwase take the whole front end sub frame and rear end down and bolt the unibody onto a 4.0 I6 jeep cherokee chassis - You'll also have 4X4 if you did that (assuming your donor jeep had the transfer case.
Then if your STILL not happy with its performance take the buick body off again and change out the Cherokee front end beef up the suspension and drop a crate 350 and 3 speed into that fucker (Stick shift - automatics use up alot of horsepower in the torque converter)
This will not work in california though, you cannot dramatically modify your car mainly 95 buick V6 must not be modified to carbureted, larger engine, anything producing higher SMOG number than that original V6 produced, you could however make it a 4 cylinder though, just cant exceed manufacturers HCe for that make/model/year.

Pure bullshit.
Chevelles and Novas are heavy and need a lot of engine to be entertaining. A good one of either is more expensive and also outside the scope of of OP's question. Also, 4.0L Cherokees are unibody, AMC/Chrysler called it uniframe.

Wikipedia says your car has a 3.1l V6. It is member of the 60 degree engine family. There is mention in the wiki article that the 3.1 is prone to cooling issues leading to blown head gaskets and cracked heads if the system is not properly maintained. I wouldn't fuck with it.

Too bad it isn't two years older, it would have had a 90 degree 3.3 which should be externally compatible with the 3800 or supercharged 3800.

>> No.439896

OP didn't fuck up. I grew up with those 1970s cars when they were NEW. (I visit DIY between fapping to tranny porn on /b/)

Have one reliable car you DO NOT fuck with. Have a play toy too. If you make them the same car your wallet and mobility will suffer.

Even experienced mechanics have more than one ride. (Usually many.)

If you want a motorcycle (great fun), keep car and buy bike. Ensure bike is completely sound and reliable before ditching car. I don't live in the rust belt, but got by with my Harley, a BMW airhead, and various Britbikes (which are junk except Vincent and I can't afford one of those) for several years and had no car or truck.

Depends on how much you're willing to spend/ how much work you plan on doing. Best option while still keeping it a skylark: buy used 92-94 grand am with Quad 4 HO and Getrag trans. Swap subframe/ trans/ engine (easier than welding up new trans mounts) after an engine rebuild. Toss a 150 wet shot on it; the HO CAN take it. Gut the car. If it doesn't make you go forward or stop, get rid of it. No ac, no heater, no radio, no passenger seats, no door panels, no anything. Enjoy your 11-12 second car.

I thought the standard motor for GM cars of that era was the 3.8 liter. I had a Camaro and Impala with that engine and it's 200 hp and pretty reliable.

I bet your friends/family hated your mooching ass for needing them and using their gas whenever you wanted to carry something.

>> No.440173

>>439931
it was standard for a lot of cars, however N, J, and L-bodies from that era never came equipped with them. That means custom engine mounts, electronics, and trans work. Unless you have money to throw at it and/ or are handy with a welder (and if OP was, they wouldn't be asking us) it's just not worth the effort. Best standard equipped engine on these platforms was the Quad 4 W41/ C41 package. A distant second readily swappable engine was the 3.4L out of a grand am GT.

Correct, Mechanic here and dont try to rod this car OP. It will only go so fast. Just do a full tune up with trans flush and get something else. I m sayin if it was already supercharged then well cool but just use it as a driver to get parts for your project car. Pic related to one of 6 - 350 chevys. No biggie but it rips!

I just had to come back to say that your car is clean and looks real good. shit-id drive it and believe it or not that says a lot. Naaa roll it stock with some real nice tires and real light window tint. and keep the tune ups and waxxes and this will soon be rare to see one this clean. People will be sayin at the gas station "my Dad/uncle/aunt/ext had one of these" and then you know you have a rarer car by peoples choice.
I do custom stuff a lot and I would beg not to mod this money or not.

Go back to your nursing home and read up on the "crazy" advancements in automobile technology in the last 3 years, like fuel injection and ECUs.

Why anyone thinks old school hot rods are cool anymore is beyond me, they are demonstrably worse than a modern car in every way.

Can't corner, can't launch, weigh way too much, use engines and mechanics barely more advanced than a steam engine from the 1800s.
