So I bought myself a shiny new box fan and a HVAC filter. I taped them together so the filter can catch the dust in the air.

The fan slowed down a little bit like the filter was making it work harder, do you think that will burn out the motor or anything?

Put the fan in a box, cut out a hole to wedge it, put the filter over a larger opening so it doesn't impressive air flow as much.

which side did you tape it to? in other words, is the fan pushing air through the filter or pulling it through? did you try it both ways?

I think the amperage on a standard box fan is very low, you shouldn't have any trouble with it burning itself out. Just to be on the safe side I would buy the thinnest filter you can and keep a close eye on it for a couple days. But in all honesty I don't think you will have a problem.

I did the same OP. Fan died a little over a year later but it was a dollar store special anyways.. and it ran 24/7...

It had probably ran for a good 2 years before that also... So I doubt the filter did anything to it.

On a side note. The filter was pretty clean so I doubt it had any effectiveness.

amp draw actually drops as the fan moves less air. Less work = less amp draw. The fan is not actually working harder, it's working less than before.

I didn't believe it until I tried, but get out your amp clamp and try guys, get a reading with the fan running normally and then block the intake entirely (plywood or similar) and check your amp draw again....it's interesting stuff.

What you are referring to is LRA or LRC -Locked Rotor Amps or Locked Rotor Current and that is basically the equivalent of inrush current drawn constantly until the motor overheats.

Blocking airflow does not stop the rotor, it just limits the amount of "work" it can perform.Get out your ammeter and test. I did this experiment in a motors class a few years back, very interesting.
