Tip: you may goy problems with the cap, I used an old USB connector to make the hole, I used a dremel to take out the pins and with a hammer i made punched the wood with it, then, using the dremel again I easily removed the wood excess from the cap.

>> No.412635

OP, instead of just dipping the thing in varnish I'd recommend you thin a little of it with the appropriate solvent, apply a thin coat by brush and allow it to dry. Then you "de nib" the surface (sand it down lightly with fine paper, or scuff with Scotchbrite or steel wool). You can do this a second time.

This actually could give you a good enough finish but if you want a thicker layer of varnish so it's more robust then you can apply 2 or 3 coats of the varnish at full strength.

You can dip if you want to (the surface will be better after sealing in this way) but be a bit more careful about wicking off the excess so you don't end up with a bead along the bottom edge. Most varnishes have plenty of open time to allow you to remove this kind of excess.

Re. getting your hands on better woods on the cheap, I'd keep an eye out for old furniture that's been thrown out if you get that where you are. One small piece could give you enough wood to make 200 of these.

Another good idea is to look for scraps on construction sites or where renovation is being done - some wood trim may not be crappy softwood in your location, and if they're doing stairs the banister and/or spindles are very commonly hardwood and cutoffs are usually just thrown away, or burnt. It may not be the best quality but at least it is hardwood and the price is hard to argue with :-)

I've poasted this elsewhere but it's kinda the only project I have worth posting/got pics of.

Gutted an old transistor Hammond (with 12" woofer and a rotating Leslie drum built-in), and chopped it down into a Leslie speaker cab, complete with stompbox to control Leslie speed.

It's a little more refined now than in the pic (Graphic EQ, source switches, etc) but no pics of that stuff.

Sort of related to OP, i'm building a dead drop network/game in my city. i have 30 4gb usb's that i will place around the city in various interesting places, each one containing some neat stuff and a clue to the encryption or location of my "master drop". the master drop is a 60gb hdd that will have a sata-usb connector on it, and will use a Pantech um175 to email/text me when it is powered on. This will be cemented into a cinder block at a place of my choosing. Of course i will load it with 30gb of porn, but i need some ideas on some other interesting things to add to it. maybe i'll add a treasure map to where i will bury some cash or valuables. It will be fun

Did you miss the tips on varnishing in >>412635 ?

It's a typo, or perhaps OP's from Spain where they pronounce the V differently.

If you're looking to finish an acoustic guitar you really have no choice, have to go with a quality varnish or lacquer finish. Lots to pick from, although purists will scream at you even something from the hardware store will do the job pretty well.

Well I ended up gifting it today, so I didn't take any pictures, but I messed up threading the pages like 7 times, then the cover material refused to stick to the adhesive paper (I know right), which meant ugly loose portions, and threads started coming out, and I apparently measured the cardboard wrong because the spine was miles away. I honestly don't know what happened.

However the whole thing is quite easy with minimum invest on your part. I highly recommend you try it out.
