Hello DIY,

Google failed me so now Im asking you all. Anyone know where I can find plans to build this?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

>> No.410562

What in the hell do you need plans for that?
>cut boards to 45 degrees at the end
>put knocks in them
Damn kids.

Cause I dont want to half ass it. Is that for sure at 45? how much over hang from the notch would be recommended? What is the portion of one tier to the next? Etc.

Sheesh... Old timers, expect everyone to know as much as they do, but never want to instruct...

Just do it. If you do it wrong do it over. Nothing is ever going to perfect.

he is just trying to get the best result the first time and therefore not waste time and resources.
I see nothing wrong with that.

That guy gave a shitty answer, but do put a little effort into it.
use 1x4 stock.
Math up what the hypotenuse of a 45d cut across 4in stock would be, then round up. Call it 4in or so.
Start at the top. How wide do you want the top to be? 8in? Add 2x4 to the length to account for the miter.
Next tier, start with 16 (2x4+8), add another 8in.
Do as many tiers as you want.
X4 for 4 sides. Theres your inches of 1x4 you need.

Mistakes are how you learn. You can't have your hand held all the way through life.

Get a miter box. Cut your outer measurements, then cut your miters.
Get a piece of plywood. Cut it a square withthe side = longest tier measurement.

This is a work safe board, mate.

>> No.410583

Figure out how wide you want the base. If you don't know, say 2' because 'murica everything is 4x8 at the stores.

Figure out how tall you want or how many tiers you want. Golden ratio that shit. Base*goldenratio = height
height/number of tiers * sqrt(2) = how tall the board is for a tier.

For how much overhang to have, line up the outside of the overhange of the next board with the inside of the current one.

This seems fairly simple and straightforward to build. Lots of damn annoying angle cuts though. If you screw up the angle cuts and don't want to waste wood by scrapping a piece, then just cut the notches a little larger and put a screw or 2 in them so they hold at the right angle.

Ideally you would notch both upper and lower boards so they fit together snug without moving around.

Also, since it's a planter and going to be filled with wet soil, I don't think I would include the bottom board, since it will just warp and rot faster than the side boards. If you're not planning on moving it, just leave the bottom board out. If you want to be able to move it, maybe use plastic board for concrete board for the bottom piece, something that won't rot.

Nsfw.
Make a mistake. Looks like only 2 sides match in length. Not x4.
Shitty part will be the small angle on the joints.
I'd suggest 1.5in deep with a small angle like 20d
After that, i dunno. On mobile with a tiny image im lookin at and shitty woodworking skills.

But i tried to help with the skills i have.

If the thing in OP's pic is what I think it is, and I am pretty sure it is because I am always right, then I don't think 1x4s are going to be strong enough.

It's also meant to hold soil, so regular boards would rot pretty quick.

>>410578
To update the advice he gave you above, I would recommend 2x6s instead of 1x4s and use treated lumber meant for outdoor use.

Other than that, it is pretty good advice.

What are you planting? I used to have something like that for growing strawberries at an old house, now you are making me want to make one again...

my attempt at reverse engineering your thumbnail. just expand each level until its big enough or you run out of wood.

the hardest bit is going to be chamfering the inner plane of the notches to accommodate the board angle, i'd use a jigsaw myself.

how do you attach the potted plants? or do you fill it with dirt

Those types of planters are fantastic for growing herbs. Especially mint, since if it is not contained it will spread everywhere. If you plant that, give it a tier to itself.

NICE! What about using a table saw at 45 making several passes until you get it the width of the board. That's what I was thinking at least.

Yeah fill with dirt and plunk the seeds in is my guess, that part i really dont know but that's what I'm seeing in pictures.

To make this easier, build one level, fill with dirt, then the next, add more dirt, etc. Maybe that is obvious, but just in case...
