Any good tips for having a successful run and avoiding being caught?

I've never done it but I figure a short stick, some leather work gloves, and pants would be good. You don't want to get jabbed and no sense in rummaging with your hands if a stick will do.

If employees come out, just say you were looking for some boxes to use while moving.

In fact, bring some cardboard boxes to put beside the dumpster just in case cops roll thru.

>> No.398620

I've done it, don't be a pussy like these guys you don't need gloves.

Go for a walk at about 3am, bring a bookbag with some plastic bags in it. Hit up places like aldi, sweetbay, and publix since they all close early.

You'll more than likely always find produce - they through that out a few days before it goes bad. I've been lucky enough to find 6 20 lb butter ball turkeys the night they got tossed out. Stuck them in my freezer and ate turkey sandwiches at work for about 6 weeks.

You'll usually just find veggies and meats. Be smart about what you eat and wash it. rule of thumb is if it looks gross, it is gross. You're evolved enough to tell the difference.

If a cop stops you for walking around at night tell him you just got into an argument about kids or something big like that with your girlfriend and you needed some time to your. No questions asked ever.

It is extremely illegal if you do not have explicit permission from the property's owner assuming it's a private dumpster. It's even more illegal if it's a government owned dumpster.

Cops might leave you alone because they are worthless/corrupt fucks who only care about making their ticket quota or nigger quota. Most areas have overcrowding in their jails so they dont dick around with shit covered dumpster divers. The assumption is if you are so poor that you are digging in the trash, then the popo aint gonna get it's fines from your broke ass so they leave you alone. But if a local business owner or employee sees you and reports you, you are going for a ride in the cop car.

Step 1: look in dumpster
Step 2: Is there anything good in the dumpster?
Step 3: Drag that shit home
Step 4: Scrub yourself in the shower to get rid of that hobo stank

If you have to bypass a lock or jump a fence or something, that's illegal. But taking stuff from dumpsters isn't illegal on its own. There's case law on this, it's not illegal to take things that people are throwing away, unless the city you're in has made a special law to that effect.

Also in practice most cops don't give a shit if you're not making a mess or scaring the neighbors.

If you drive, park far away
Bring a box or one of those folding karts you see old women and hobos pushing around
Alternatively, dive and place your shit next to the dumpster. Then come back in your car to pick it up with the quickness
Gloves are nice, but not required
Dont wear your sunday best, grab some grubby clothes
Scope out what night each dumpster gets emptied
Close the gate if the dumpster has one
Be respectful and tidy up afterwards
Be quiet
If you get pulled out of a dumpster, be courteous to the officer and answer everything in a yes sir, no sir fashion
I personally stay away from restaurants, those are disgusting
Grocers are okay if you find the stuff right as it was thrown out.
Big box stores without a compactor are the best.
Favorites:
Sporting goods stores
Office supply stores
Toy stores
Bike shops
Gas stations and Convenience stores (usually find expired beer and the like)

Never open a compactor, you go from a trespassing ticket that the officer will probably just tell you to go home. To a breaking and entering charge that unless you have some good connections (and if your dumpster diving you probably don't) will be more than the haul I have gotten in the last year from diving.

Stay safe, use common sense, and If you don't have a use for it, leave it for the next diver.

Pfft, not using your pickup truck to dumpster dive is fucking clownshoes. I guess I do dive a lot of industrial areas for scrap aluminum and shit. You'd be surprised how great aluminum is for making heatsinks.

Anyways, gloves are imperative if you want to DIG, I've been cut through gloves before, and it would have been wayyyyyyy worse without them. A lot of times you can just glance in and catch the eye of something. I pulled 20+ full on working Dell computers from the county school works office dumpster. 14 of them were in working order. I donated all but two of them to people I knew without computers. I use the other two computers to run my CnC mill, and router.

Just be respectful. Don't make a shitload of noise, don't react if the cops pull up. If you act like you are doing something illegal, they will give you a lot of shit. If you act like it's something you do everyday, and it's normal, they'll usually just allow you to carry on. I usually tell them I'll be out doing this until a certain time, in a certain area and they just said "Cool, be careful."

Florida has SOME perks, I guess.

Funny you mention this .. where I work we are on a 3/4 year PC lifecycle .. after that it gets thrown away (perfectly good PCs .. lastest batch are Core2Duo/4GB ram with Nvidia graphics cards). Because it's more expensive to pay somebody to wipe/format them the drives are removed (good 500gb-1tb drives) and cut with a bandsaw .. then entire PCs are put on pallets and sent to a shredder.

We PAY THEM to do this .. something like 10 cents a pound.

Alright guys. I never really post on 4chan, but I feel like sharing my experience with you.

I was reminded about dumpster diving when I came across this thread a few days ago. I read 'The Art & Science of dumpster diving', and browsed the web for a lot of personal experiences. I was in slight disbelief over the profit of this activity, and the wastefulness of society.

I wanted to investigate this personally, but I live in a small town, in a 1'st world socialistic country that prides itself with its ecologically friendlyness.
I didn't expect to find anyting other than rotten tomatoes, but I needed an excuse for a walk. I can't sleep anyway.

We have two grocery stores here. One is just 40 seconds from home, but its dumpsters is behind closed gates. I went to the other one.

It was sometime after 5 on Monday morning, but the back is lit up well at night. I found the place where the organic stuff is thrown, and immediately regretted not bringing my bag. It looked like someone had neatly left a buffét just for me.
Cherry tomatoes in a plastic container, one tomato looking bruised and the rest impeccable. Cheeses not even moldy yet(even if they were, you can safely trim it off). Lots of(plastic wrapped) lettuce with a bruise or two each. Bags of onions and garlic. One large honey melon with localized rot on one end(90% salvagable), and much more.
I stuffed my pockets with onions and scurried home to get my bag and return. Sadly, at that point the delivery truck had arrived and I didn't want to risk confrontation.

Part 2 coming up.

Same day, Monday, everything was emptied by the garbage truck. I returned at night and found yet again another buffét waiting for me. This time I brought my bag and crammed it with potato salad, cheese, ruccola salad, sausage, and more. Most edibles were left behind, since I couldn't carry it all. Nothing had expired or starting to rot or get moldy. All the food was in plastic bins or bags, and so had not physically touched the inside of the trash bin. And about those bins, they are of the small variety(width/depth I'm guessing 2'x2' or 60x60cm). I didn't have to jump into some large metal container and dig around. I left the place in the same condition I found it.
My only regret is not getting into this years ago. And of course that melon *sigh*. The melon that got away...

That's all for me right now. I'm heading out again in quest for wealth and glory.
Any questions? And haters, please explain why this is wrong or unhealthy.

In Chinatown in Toronto there were these crazy asian grandmas who went through the trash every night. There weren't dumpsters there, just boxes of garbage that got picked up off the curb every night (they have municipal compost bins there since then though). They were awful clean looking if they were homeless. They would direct us to where the good finds were and were generally delightful, crazy old ladies.

(Eng: It IS after all discarded for a reason?)

Yep, there are reasons. People pick the better-looking produce where there are options. Therefore, anything with a dent will never be bought and is discarded, because even if the consumer didn't have an option, they grew up believing that anything that doesn't look like commercials will kill you. A bad apple could be removed from a bag of apples, but it's not worth the paid labor to do so.

>> No.402034

Also they overproduce or over-order certain things and then have a surplus. They may have gotten one crate of produce too many and its just simpler to dispose of it than store it because they know it'll never sell in time before it goes off. There's nothing wrong with it YET but they know it'll never all be sold so why bother keeping it.

As for overproduction, pretty much every bakery in existence does this. Its cheaper for the business in the long run to make too much bread but be known as a place that never runs out of key items. So even if they throw stuff away every single day, its better for them as a business than to make not enough and have people disappointed that their favorite product isn't there sometimes. Hence there is always bread in dumpsters and lining the shelves of the food banks.

Yeah and unless a store has a specific policy about dumpster diving, the staff are rarely going to care. Sometimes they challenge you but nine times out of ten you can tell that they haven't thought about what they're doing and are just reacting. Responding to them in a calm and articulate manner is usual enough to put them at ease.

One time a guy came out for a smoke and found me and was like "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING..." then looked around sheepishly when he saw exactly what that was, and then he mumbled "er, not that I care or anything" and had his smoke. Another guy confronted me and he had a stick or something in his hand. I simply told him that wasn't necessary and I think he felt kind of foolish all of a sudden.

My dumpster diving tip is to concentrate on office buildings; it's where I got a two big professional laser printers, one of them color. They both have minor hiccups from time to time (for example, one fails the RAM startup test once in a while, so I just restart it) which is why they were junked, but otherwise they're fine printers each worth over $1000. In addition to these commercial, and industrial accounts, we have scales where we buy from the public, and offer free drop off for various items.
A lot of these customers are dumpster divers.

Truckloads of stuff comes through, you never know what people will be getting rid of. As they say "one man's trash, is another man's treasure" turned a 7million dollar profit in 2007. Not bad for a non-profit organization.

Hey, this thread encouraged me to give it a go.

I'm not keen on eating food from a bin, but I collect shit from bulk rubbish (furniture mostly) so I figured there's not much difference taking shit from a skip/dumpster provided it's clean.

I found pic related.

A Calvin Klein satchel bag,
A spare strap for a satchel bag (have one with a broken strap at home)
2 sets of boxing gloves
A multi colour hanging storage thing

All were in black bin bags within a dumpster which had a stack of women's clothes, women's underwear, stuffed toys, paper work etc.

I also found in another one
Stackable in/out trays (one broken, I can glue it back together though.)
Some clip boards (only took the one, for uni)
A couple of ring binders (Only took the one, for uni again)
A heap of dividers and plastic sleeves for the ring binders (Collected them from various binders and put them all into the one I kept)

Pretty happy with it.

I also saw some car wheels next to a bin, but I don't think they were actually rubbish so I left them.

What I got:
>hockey net with a small rip in the corner
>working tall lamp with a dent in the pole
>chair frames
>tires

I was pretty lucky with the lamp because that week I wanted to get one and on garbage day the drunk down the street put it on the curb. It just had a dent in it so it was leaning slightly to the right. Grabbed that shit and bent it back and it looks good as new and still works. I could've taken the tires somewhere to get cash but instead I gave them to my uncle who is even worse off than me to get cash, but still, people are just lazy and would rather throw perfectly good items away and buy new ones than put in the time to fix them. ffs people are so fucking wasteful.

What do you use to do such and act? What kind of store do you work at?

>> No.404882

Alright, /mu/ here, saw this thread and thought I'd semi-contribute. I have no real interest in dumpster diving myself but I see nothing wrong with snagging some free shit others have thrown out. However, as someone who has worked at multiple grocery stores and knows how the trash situation works, let me drop some nuggets.

Recently a lot of stores, particularly the Giant chain, have adopted this retardo fucking ordering system that automatically (i.e., without human input) orders a new crate of X whenever a crate's worth of X have been bought. I don't know why but this leads to cartoonishly large amounts of X a lot of the time, so yeah, sometimes we're throwing out full crates/boxes of fruits and veggies.

Grocery stores, at least all the ones I've worked at, use trash compactors, though. Nothing survives these things. All those poor unwanted veggies are mixed in with the fucking foul outside/front end/(where applicable) gas station trash, which is basically a light-brown slurry of half-eaten fast food, coffee, soda, piss, shit, barf, beer, and sometimes dead animals. Keep that in mind.

(cont.)

>> No.404885

>>404882
Furthermore, yes, it's illegal, at least in most U.S. states, to dumpster dive/otherwise go digging through the trash. Peoples' identities get stolen that way, and frequently people will steal discarded receipts and try and return what's on them. That law's not ever changing. Managers of stores don't want to get in trouble so they WILL lock the trash up and call the cops on you if they see you trying to get in. Very few cops are the "oh, it's cool, he's just trying to score a chair" kind. In my experience most cops hate homeless people with a barely-contained passion, especially in bigger cities. Store managers hate homeless people because they sleep in the store and sometimes drive away customers. Sometalented /diy/erdigging through the trash is NOT distinguishable from a homeless dude in their minds, and if you're well-dressed then that will probably just piss them off even more, or make them think you're looking for pharmacy records or receipts. You will get detained, you'll probably get locked up if you mouth off even once, and, shit, charged might even be pressed. So, yeah, be careful.

Also, as stated above, most retail places that sell good shit (computers and whatnot) will either destroy unsold merch after a certain date, or return it for a refund from the manufacturer.

Again, I'm neutral on the whole thing, but others aren't. Please be careful and don't go into it with the attitude that cops are your buddies.

Especially supermarkets. I've never seen a supermarket with a dumpster. Ever.

Great thread. I usually don't dive, but every Sunday night in my city is trash night in the nicer sections. A friend and I usually go out to pick, especially in the spring, and have come out with some great stuff. Found a vintage Schwinn bike we sold for $150, a brass coffee table, a jet-ski that needed engine repair, many easy fix lawn mowers and a full living room set in impeccable condition.

Never take vacuum cleaners off the curb (unless for parts), they're usually nasty inside beyond cleaning.

Another good spot to check is apartment complex dumpsters around the first of the month. Just like college dumpsters, people moving out throw good items away so they don't have to move them.

If you plan to take a couch but need to wait for a truck, take a cushion(s) with you to claim it. Don't be a dick though, make sure you go back and get it.

local school was throwing away all their old computers, and technology. so much stuff, basically emptied the dumpster, seperated it into 3 piles,
>stuff im keeping for me
> eBay stuff
>stuff that's to old, but i might try eBay anyway.

from those i managed to get 2 working PC's good laptop, old ipod (worked fine) lots of cables. bulk amounts of accessories (headphone, keyboard, etc.)
sold almost everything else, with that money i was able to upgrade the stuff i kept and make any improvements needed, and still had 800$ left over.
burnt everything else

Yeah it seems crazy, but if you could do any one or even all of these, it's ultimate freedom. Imagine never again being slave to a job, never having to pay bills, answer to a boss, get up early for work when you'd rather sleep in, drive in traffic even though you don't feel well to go work with a bunch of fuckheads you really hate. How great would it be to escape all that and spend everyday basically going where you want and doing what you want.

This one has saved my ass twice already. Depending on how old you are/look, you can say something along the lines of "I'm doing a project for my class about what businesses throw out". With a little tweaking, you can make this argument seem totally legitimate.

Around where I live there are shit tons of businesses that throw out heaps of useful stuff, I live with a few other artists and we go diving pretty regularly. Stuff we have found:

>several brand new woolen cardigans
>mass amounts of 1.5x1.2m panels (for painting)
>a massive canvas "FOR RENT" sign (going to use as a projector screen)
>all manner of storage containers
>Australian History books

also on council pickup days I have found tons of cool stuff, like a fully functional M-Audio midi keyboard controller. Dumpster diving's pretty sweet, man

352 reporting in, nice to see a fellow FL diver.

College campuses, near the dorms, right around graduation time. OMFG the glory of those hauls. My buddy and I hit up either USF or UF every year and spend a week doing nothing but loading up our trucks and hauling it home to pick through. Our collective haul from last year:

>3 slightly damaged, less than a year old laptops. Spent $400 repairing them, sold them for $1200 total.
> 2 pefectly good laptops, kept one and sold the other for $400
> 23 digicams, all in perfect working order, including 5 dSLR's I kept one and flipped the rest for a total of $1600.
> 25 thirty gallon trashbags full of big label clothes (Aero, AmEagle, Hollister, Ed Hardy, Affliction, etc... Even some designer shit) Let our friends pick through that and just outright take whatever they wanted, sold the rest to Plato's Closet for a total of $2200
> A shitload of small electronics (iCrap products, cell phones, etc.) that we're still working on getting rid of, total count now is at $2900.

And that's just the shit we can sell easily, not including all the drugs and alcohol. We only keep weed, but we find enough pills, X and coke to keep the entire population of a small country high for a year. I still have about four gallons of vodka left over from last years haul.

College kids don't want to haul all their stuff home at the end of the year, especially the stuff that might make mommy and/or daddy upset, so they junk it. Electronics end up in the trash cause they lose something, buy a new one and find the old one when they clean out their dorm.

GodI love stupid people...

We stole other things too.

This actually inspired me to do some soft core diving myself. I found a really nice suitcase/bag thing that was empty and wasn't even dirty.
I took the trash out to the apartment dumpster and found a decent leather bag that had to be cleaned. I've also found some clothes (most of the time I can't fit them or they look dirty beyond cleaning) and furniture that I can't take. The coolest thing was a silk bathrobe that just needed a good washing.
I can upload pics, but my haul isn't very impressive.

This thread inspired me to try some dumpster diving too. I got a heroin needle through my hand and a scary man made me suck him off. I tried running to the police for help but they just tazed me because I was wearing dirty clothes to try and blend in.

This is awesome but definitely much less legal than dumpster diving.
Right out of high school I worked at a local beverage store and every now and then when I was taking out the trash (mostly cardboard boxes) I would stick a 6-pack or something in a box, leave it in the dumpster, and pick it up after work. So much fun came out of that.

I live in an apartment complex that routinely throws out perfectly usable items. I've found loads of new or gently used clothing for children and adults, shoes, housewares, toys, furniture, electronics, and lots of TV's. Whenever someone has been evicted, or just skipped town, and left all their stuff in the apartment maintenance has to clear everything out and it usually just gets chucked in the dumpster. And around Black Friday when everyone wants to up-grade their TV/sound system/computer/whatever, their older models end up on the curb by the dumpster.

I've scavenged a lot of useful items from the dumpster over the years. And what I have no use for I take to a donation center.

I hate the wastefulness of this disposable society.
