Hey /diy/, my boyfriend is moving out of his parents house to live with friends which means he doesnt have much to fill his new room with since he can't transport everything there.
I want to make him a lamp with a glass bottle that i have here.Last time i did anything like this i ended up with a wall stained black after the cabbles of the table lamp blowed up so I need your help.

Is LED a good idea and why ? Is there any material that i shouldn't let close to it ?

What should i use to set the LED together and make a "drawing" with it ?

Do you have a tutorial on how to set up everything ?

As you can see I have no clue on how to do it but i really wanted to.I don't even know what i should know and ask.

The bottle looks like a regular beer bottle but its colorless and completely transparent.Height 22,5 cm.6 diameter at the bottom and 2,5 on top.

pic kinda related, its a bottle lamp but not exactly what i have in mind.In fact I'm open to opinions

LEDs are good because they don't get as hot. Sounds like your last lamp overheated? Go for the lowest-wattage kind of bulb that gives off enough light (since watts=heat pretty much; and LEDs usualy get you more light per watt).

The last and only one i made blew as soon as i connected it to the wall.We had to mess with the power switches to get energy back in the appartment lol

What do i need to buy to set a led lamp ?

You should check out this thread OP

You need a DC power supply preferably at least a few Volts higher than the forward voltage of the LED (Vf , usually 2 to 3 Volts) and a resistor for each LED. An old phone charger or power supply from something. It also needs to be a high enough mA rating (20mA per LED - can be less if the Voltage is 9V or higher). If you find one post it's specs and the LED specs and someone here will help you with the resister values and probably even draw you a sketch.

fuck that, OP should just get a cheap LED bulb and a E27 socket with a cable and on/off switch and be done with it.

Google "cold cathode"

Extrapolate on the information contained in those search results.

This is a very slow board. A post will stay on page 0 for an hour with no replies. It's normal for there to be an hour or more between posts.

Not >>398049 , But it sounds like you wired it incorrectly a short in the wiring would have cause that to happen.

v/r=i
(I'm assuming European 240v power) 240/0=Infinity
Meaning an Infinite number of Amps could flow through the circuit. Wire is only rated to a certain amperage (which you exceeded) thus causing arc flash.

.. you should probably just make him a sandwich..

If you are still content and mind-set on making something electrical.. might i suggest you make something battery powered with leds. Not much of chance for it to take fire.

If it is a clear glass bottle, might i suggest you make a base for that bottle.. with a lip that goes a cm or so up from the base of the bottlse. Inside that base, you throw a few wires, a few leds, a pressure switch.. Inside the bottle you get some white slightly foggy liquid thing.. So when your boyfriend put the bottle in the base, he gets wonderous light. When he removes it from the base, he does in fact get darkness.

If you want to go all fancypants, get a small 'duino thing, and rgb'leds. hook all together with a pressureswitch.. Make it change color at intervals, or just change each time the bottle is placed.

if you are dead set on using an outlet instead of batteries you would need a transformer of some kind.. most diy'ist way would be to find a dead led bulb, tear it apart.. and use the electronics in there as your stepdown trafo and inverter.. Just measure out the voltage, and do some quick math.

>an Infinite number of Amps could flow through the circuit

but thats wrong. There is no case anywhere where a short circuit produces an infinite current flow. I = V/R doesn't apply the way you think it does. If you put a 0.001ohm piece of wire between the terminals of a 1.5v AA battery, will 1500A of current flow?

Only because AA cells have internal resistance, dumbass.
Try it with a 1 farad Capacitor, and your wet tongue.
