Very novice /diy/er here. So I need to attach a strand of these style LED's to the back of a monitor (which is just simple matte plastic). I've tried normal tape but it doesn't have enough of a hold. What should I try for the best (and preferably easiest and cheapest) results?

I agree.

I'm worried it might leave a permanent mark. I was thinking perhaps a heavy duty tape? Would that be viable?

cleaning the surface first will help

LEL. Tape is glue. Glue leaves residue. Hotglue does not.
Get it and lather it up.

Wouldn't the slight residue left by tape be a lot easier to remove than the giant globules of hot glue?

Yea, it would be safer.
Hot glue usually sticks together good and comes off in one piece, but I've seen it really bond to stuff too. Especially plastic.

Shit no! Have you ever tried removing really bad masking tape residue? It fucking sucks! Go with the hot glue.

WD-40 or cooking spray removes tape residue good, unless it's masking tape that's been there for years.
