So I'm in the market for a new butane torch.

I'm considering this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003H6NNFS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It seems to have mostly favorable reviews. What do you guys think?

>> No.360398

Well it is pretty expensive.

>>360398
Any other suggestions then?

I read that this one can be used for plumbing soldering so I guess that means it's pretty damn powerful.

Other people in their reviews said that they used it during plumbing.

So does anyone have other suggestions?

i really don't know why there are no serious replies yet.

maybe real men use propane torches to solder copper pipes.

somebody who knows: butane vs. propane, pros and cons. /diy/ awaits your expertise.

I just want a small general-purpose torch. Not necessarily for plumbing but can be used for that if needed.

As for propane vs. butane, I've heard that propane burns hotter.

However, this chart here
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/flame-temperatures-gases-d_422.html
says that they burn at practically the same temperature (10 degrees C difference) in air.

I bought a Bernzomatic TS4000 for plumbing, dethawing, fire-starting, etc. and don't regret it for a second. It's a big beefy triggerable/lockable torch that screws on to bottles.

this

i too stopped screwing aroudn with "cheaper". these are real regulators, the flame doesn't go HUGE then tiny when you tilt the torch like lesser designs. plus, piezo spark. lasts many many years. quality

I have one of these and it works perfectly.

I just picked up a TS8000BT because I have a big copper project coming up. I'm shitty at pipe soldering and I'm blaming part of my shittiness on using a crappy torch that kept going out and pissing me off and forcing me to relight with a match.

I wanted the adjustable flame because for fine work I kept overheating the crap out of shit and remelting other shit I'd done.

My uncle, who is a plumber, won't fuck around with anything besides MAPP gas. Not worth the trouble. Also for tight jobs he's got this.

I can't imagine spending 40 bucks on basically a shitty oversized lighter.

How easy/hard is it to get mapp gas? Only stuff I ever see on the bernzomatic shelves are "max power propylene" which isn't the same thing.

On April 30, 2008, the Petromont Varennes plant closed its methylacetylene/propadiene plant.
They were the only North American plant making MAPP gas, and the only legal supplier of trademarked MAPP gas in the world.

Also, I looked up "Bernzomatic" on eBay for shits and giggles. This is what came up in "Related Searches".

Speaking of soldering copper, does anyone have any experience with using this stuff
>Just for Copper
for joining copper pipes to fittings?

How well does it work and what did you think?

>> No.360679

>>360672

I have used that stuff a few times (Licensed plumber, deal with copper a shit load) It is so so.

>> No.360729

>>360679
Would it be OK to use on small copper pipe, like 1/4 inch copper pipe? What exactly is the biggest pipe this stuff can be safely used on?

I can actually get the stuff for cheaper than I can buy solder and soldering supplies.

Also, is it even possible to solder such small (1/4 inch or even 1/2 inch) copper pipes to fittings using a butane torch like the one in the OP?

>> No.360773

>>360729

cheaper is NOT A REASON. it's the wrong solution to the problem.

>> No.360776

>>360773
I also don't have to do a lot of soldering.

>> No.360952

Works great.
