ITT, our favorite sources of tehnological detritus and offcasts and junque, aka surplus.

Apex, Sun Valley CA (Los Angeles). One of the last walk-in places with aisles and aisles of tech shit stacked to the ceilngs, dating back to the 1960's.

pic: item at The Black Hole, Los Alamos NM circa 2006. Proprietor: Ed Grothus (died a few years back). Place is gone now. Absolutely best Cold War surplus in the Yewnighted Stilts.

Nice idea for a thread, I'd love to know of any places left in the UK (sadly all replaced, it seems, with the UK version of radio shack)

Main Electronics in Vancouver has a massive amount of cold war era equipment. Some of it's on display like a vintage tube testers and multimeter that look like pocket watches. Phil (the old guy) will show you a lot more in the back if you ask. They keep it around to rent as movie props. Its where the equipment you see in Watchmen and a lot of other movies/tv comes from.

I've got a nice collection of my own old equipment. I collected it from UBC's electronic waste bins while I studied there. Most of them just needed a new cord.

A shame the surplus electronics biz can only seem to survive off of guys trying to find old tubes for their amps. Trust me, I know that feel. No one seems to see the charm of a wonderful Nixie tube counter or voltmeter, a panel full of lights and knobs, or archaic equipment they can loot for exceptional chips and bits. If I'm ever in LA again I'll try and find you guys.

Theres a place in Santa Clara, CA called HSC, or Halted Specialties. They've been around (albeit, not in the same location) since 1964. They got 2 aisles filled with anything, and an entire aisle dedicated to test equipment, and every now and then they get the occasional high powered laser or something or other. Fun place, has a great selection of ICs

I have a hunch who the person that started the thread is...
Anyway far away from you guys in Europe and specifically Greece do you know what the army does with old electronics?
They dispose/destroy/burn/smash them!
Only occasionally does some stuff come out at some obscure auctions that only somebody who knows the right guy learns about... Dickheads...

Oh and get this looking around for tube amps I came across this guy in the Netherlands who seems to be a lucky bastard living close to a place like that:

Went to The Black Hole when I was little. The place was amazing and had a huge impact on me. The owner was a cool dude, and its sad to hear he passed.

In San Diego there is Murphy's Surplus Warehouse. Lots of old military equipment and even a rocket engine in the back. Worth checking out. http://www.murphyjunk.bizland.com/
