Hey /diy/
I was thinking about buying a worktop for my father this christmas
He usually works on his model airplanes.
Replacing the top layer of the workbench would be too much (it's a very old/solid table), but it's also pretty damaged and well...old.
Is there any material I should buy?
The table is 75x200 cm big

I have a sheet of 1/8" plexiglass that I lay over the plans so I can cut directly on top of the patterns without shredding them and damaging my wood desk.

Luckily I just took this photo:
I bumped against the upper plate, it's about 5 cm thick and not attached to the actual workbench.
I never realized it untill now.
So what wood would be good for a workbench?

Thank you!

What is the current tabletop made out of? Is just sanding it down to remove the imperfections out of the question? What does he use the surface for (Cutting, gluing, ect)?

If he wants a good surface, just make a good, thick butcher board. If he needs something perfectly level, use MDF. If he only uses exto knives and the likes on the surface, perhaps look into a self healing mat they use for cutting fabric.

that's a nice chunk of wood, i'd plane/sand it down to smooth and give it a light refinish

That picture is from google.

Wood, can't tell what wood, but the quality is good (though it's partially hollow).
He just glues/cuts/paints everything on that wood, he is too lazy to use some kind of protection

Like I said, it's hollow, and there's a huge hole (bottom right corner, you can slightly see it), so sanding it down wouldn't do that much...

Could you Fill the hole/ coat the table in a layer of 2 part epoxy ? If it fucks up you can just sand it down.

Level table
>Create a few mill ridge or cut down the middle a cm if you want it to sit right
>Mix and fill with 2 part epoxy
>once set a clear and durable coat that can be sanded off if need be
