SO I picked this up since it was on a crazy sale

can we get a Dremel thread going? I am pretty sure everyone on /diy/ owns/has owned one

I have something like 5-6 right now. I've killed about as many. All the multi-speed ones die very quickly while the single speed ones seem to last forever with 3 times the work done.

>> No.322943

Posting 'cause I just finished using mine. Found that it works wonders with some fine cutting compound to make phone screens like new again.

Use it for fucking everything.

Please do elaborate...

>> No.322947

>Phone screen scratched to fuck through being in pocket with keys etc
>Decided using cutting compound (car polish) with dremel and a soft head on low-ish speed might get some of the scratches out
>10 mins of reapplying polish and dremelling, screen is smooth as hell

Tested it on an old piece of perspex first. Only problems are if you stay in one area on a high speed, it burns through a bit. No such problems on phone screen though.

Carved this pumpkin the other day with a dremel. Fun shit.

That's pretty cool actually, wish I hadn't slaved away with a knife on my pumpkin now.

a dremel or other brand rotary tool is something every /diy/nosaur should own. my fav one is the dremel stylus, but it could use a bit more torque. with they would come out with a corded version of it

>> No.322965

>>322964

oops, i wish they would come out with...

>> No.323056

I have that exact model, OP.

Works a treat, but be careful because multi-speed ones like this build up heat very quickly and the thick plastic exterior doesn't let you know.

If you let it get hot too much you'll dramatically reduce its lifespan.

Feel the air coming out of the vents on the sides, and if it's getting to be burning hot, it's time to let the tool rest.

I had that Canadian Tire imitation-Dremel too. I tried to cut some PCBs with it, and after a couple minutes on high the motor's brushes self-destructed!

You could make it corded if you want. Just find out its power needs, take it apart, and install a jack for plugging in a wall adapter.

My last Dremel project was.....hmmm....cutting slots in security screws to take apart a microwave I was harvesting parts from. Pic very related, just a different microwave and different type of security screws same result though.

>> No.323140

I use mine for working on guitars, clamp the body down, stick in a router bit and in a few minutes I've got space for custom electronics. At first I was terrified at the thought of routing something freehand but eh, it's pretty alright.

Also I find the steel brush attachment on low speed to be better for fine sanding than an actual sander.
And I use it for drilling pilot holes instead of swapping out drill bits on my larger drill, seeing as I only have one.

I just bought a multi speed one, I need the slower settings for fine work on plastic. How long did it take for yours to burn up and how frequently did you use it? If the multi speed is really this bad I'm exchanging it.

Holy crap, I have a dremel and I just had the most painful pumpkin carving experience ever.

I wish I had thought of this before..

Maybe next year.

Hey, fags. Ever heard of a DRILL?? It's what real men use instead of a cheap, chinese, plastic dremel that breaks down after the 2nd usage.

>> No.323523

Drills and rotary tools do not perform the same range of functions. Learn that each tool has its appropriate use, you fucking pleb.

I have a feeling that picture started out with good intentions as "useful advice in a pinch" that soon became a "reliable trolling pic" because so many people said to get security torx bits.

>> No.323529

>>323523
OK, for cutting some serious metal or fine polishing dremel can beat an ordinary drill. I've used them, but the experiences here and my own lead me to believe that the dremel is cheaply-made, prone to breakage, and not a preferable choice.

I would recommend a pneumatic rotary tool for long-lasting durability.

>> No.323532

I'm a dremel fan. I've used mine for shaping, tile cutting, metal cutting, etc on small parts. Got that thing hot and nearly choking on ceramic or wood dust and it has never failed me.

>>323090
If you want to make big cuts on a PCB, get an angle grinder, and put a very thin cutoff wheel, anything from 3-5 inches for cutting steel or stainless is good.
Cuts FR4 like butter.

>> No.323536

Dremel are not sturdy workhorse tools - they are cheaply made, and prone to fail if overworked. Chuck locks and other parts can strip out easily, and the motors are pretty light duty. On the other hand, they're a good entry level rotary tool for most hobbyists and perfectly adequate for a lot of occasional craft and DIY applications. Just dont expect them to stand up to everyday hard use.

I really like my Dremel, I used to browse their idea section but it never really did much but give a photo. Some people can work off a photo but I can't.
