Ok guys, I have an idea for a car. I asked /o/, but they are 99% cunts who have no ambition beyond installing bodykits.

So, the idea is to take a CRX (I am not a ricer, it was just the first light car with a large back area I could think of) and strip out the interior. Then, remove the FWD motor, and put a v8 backwards in the back. It would stick out kind of far, so then use 2 large differentials acting as right angle drives to get power the the rear wheels.

Of course it wouldnt be pretty or very practical, but I want it to be a modern rat rod.

>> No.319502

That sounds like an unnecessarily complicated set up that will lead to problems and failure.

Check around some eurofag auto websites, those guys are pretty good at rear/mid mounting big engines in small French and Japanese hatchbacks.

>> No.319504

You'll need to lock the upper-left differential. Getting the transmission to link will be difficult. Rigidly mounting a very heavy engine&transmission&drive train will be difficult.

But don't let any of that stop you!

>>319502
The only reason is because I dont know of any transaxles made for cheap high displacement engines.

>> No.319508

I think automatic would be much easier, but also no fun. I have been thinking over some electronic controller, but it too sounds complicated. welding the diffs seems easy enough, and I hope I would be able to weld up a subframe for the engine.

Also, does anyone know of any relatively cheap high power engines that could be mounted at a high angle?

caddy 4.6 northstar. it's transverse mounted so there will be a place for you to sit and all aluminum so you won't wheelie errywhurr.

get a fuckin...what're those things from 4wds, to couple and decouple the front axle. engine to trans to coupler. don't go engineering something that exists in a slightly different function.
or, do a fwd transverse v8 mounted backwards and flip the differential gear. or just do a sane thing and use a smaller displacement engine with forced induction.
also, its already been done with an Acura integra. its badass.

but why not forced induction high displacement? Also, I think that there is no way to reverse the direction of the transaxle, unless you mean inside the actualy transmission, which I dont know much about.

However, that Cadillac engine is a good idea, if I can find one fairly cheap.

>> No.319559

Get a FWD V6 complete with transmission and differential, and put it in the back without rotating anything. Most FWD engines already have their mass in front of the axle, so you'll end up with a mid-engine car.

God mode: leave the original engine in the front, so that you have dual-engine 4WD.

vee 6... dat low power...

If I can find another CRX front end with engine I might put that back there and link the two throttles and rear steering

>> No.319622

Nice high center of gravity + narrow Civic frame = Stay the hell away from round-a-bouts.

Also with the engine ABOVE the rear wheels to the degree that it'll have to be you'll spend more time praying that each wheelie doesn't turn into a back-flip than you'll actually spend driving.

I heard racing stripes and a carbon fiber fin adds like crazy 800+ hp.

Also heard if you pick up those shiney rim covers they add about 70+ HP.

You should try it OP!!!

The only thing I can think of doing is taking an LS1 and mating it to an upside-down porsche trans (so you would have 6 forward gears)

OK so you basically want to make a mid-engine car. It's going to have a transaxle in the rear, not the over-complicated system of right-angles you describe. I suggest you study existing mid-engine designs before you go any further.

>> No.320015

Nice quads BTW.

Yeah, OP would be better off getting an existing mid-engine car and modifying/upgrading it than he would futzing around trying to completely redesign an existing front-engine FWD car.

/o/ here, he never asked us shit.

There are plenty of mid-engined Civics/CRXs/Integras/del Slows running around, usually with a B series of some description. But why would you completely fuck all your chassis rigidity when cars DESIGNED to have the engine in the rear-mid position exist and can be had cheaply. A 1MZ-swapped SW20 has about 200 horsepower out of the box and can make substantially more modified. Same goes for the stock 3S-GTE in the turbo SW20. If you'd like something easier to work on AND faster, LSx-swapped Miatas (usually LS1 swaps using the LS1, T56, and rear end out of a Fireturd) start around 350 horsepower and can support up to 2000- can you imagine? The LS1 Miata is a very well-supported swap and retains the stellar handling of the base platform.

OP, you will likely ruin your chassis rigidity doing this. "Modern rat rod" is already well-explored territory. And there are plenty of better ideas for a drag car. So why do it? If it will JUST be a trailer queen, whatever. But this car won't be fast.

flipping the differential or the ring gear inside effectively reverses the output of the trans. the idle side of the ring gear is weaker by about 20 percent. shits done all the time.
