Dear /diy/,

I am interested in building my own house with my bear hands. Are they're any guides out there? I'm interested in the traditional log-cabin, or perhaps the Viking house-in-a-hill sort of thing

I thought everyone on /diy/ already used their bear hands for everything...Is anyone on /diy/ NOT a bear?

This thread has inspired me. I'm gonna make a pair of bear hands to use a gloves this winter. Thanks /diy/!

Well, there's a lot involved. I can give you a bit from a carpenter's perspective though.... Steps required:

- Acquire Land - There is a lot to consider here - location, resale value, water/utilities, developed/cost to develop, engineering (ex: blasting solid rock), zoning/permitted land use regulations, easements, etc..
- Possibly Become a Contractor - in my state you can't build a home without being a licensed contractor. Which involves a fair amount of studying building practices/codes (which you'd need to do anyway), carrying insurance, is expensive and sucks.
- Acquire *Approved* Plans - I'm going to go ahead and say don't bother drawing up your own. You'd need to learn CAD on top of everything else. Work with an architect to have some drawn up.

I could go on... you sure you want to do this?
